Celebrate Winter's First Snow DaySaturday, December 20, 2008
12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe invites New Yorkers of all ages to come out to a neighborhood park for some winter fun!
White-capped hills around the city are open for sledding, snowman-making, and more. Parks & Recreation will provide sleds and hot chocolate at Juniper Valley Park.
What other Queens parks have slopes for sledding? I know Crocheron has a nice hill.

The Fishbowl in Forest Park near Park Lane South. Can't remember what street, or even if it's still there because its been 20 years. Even looked for it a while ago and couldn't find it again.
That was a good, big hill.

Not necessarily -- plenty of winters started out strong and fizzled out.
Like last winter: 3 inches on December 2, then only 2 more accumulating snowfalls the rest of the way.

Kevin - This year we have a very low number of sunspots, well below expectations. Sunspots have a major effect on our weather. Add to this we are just entering a negative pacific decadal oscillation (think of a 30 year period of la nina effect).
In addition to sledding, Forest Park is well known for other activities of an adult nature, usually between/among men.

My cousin did a decadal oscillation and she got arrested.

The first post by QJohnnie mentioned the fishbowl in Forest Park, in my day it was known as the Soup Bowl, and man what a hill for sledding.Its located in the golf course on Forest Park Drive between the Band shell and the small parking lot.
for the smaller kids, there is a nice wide, but short hill at the West End of Bowne Park - right above the pond - Go to 155st between 29th and 32nd Aves (Queens)
Even thought it wasn't technically legal, when the pond froze solid enough, I know we did a lot of skating there as kids
