Will Smith stop 3rd term for Bloomberg?

Speaking at a City Hall On/Off the Record breakfast Nov. 7, incoming State Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith threw up a potential roadblock to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s bid for a third term. Asked whether he would allow the State Senate to vote on a bill, sponsored by several Democratic lawmakers, that would require a public referendum before the city’s term limits law could be changed, Smith gave a simple answer: “Yep.”

Threats by Democratic state lawmakers to preempt the mayor’s bill to extend term limits with their own measure were seen as largely symbolic because Senate Republicans, who have benefited from the mayor’s financial largesse, would almost certainly have prevented a vote on the bill.

But now that Democrats have wrested control of the Senate from Republicans, the bill’s sponsors, including Smith’s third-in-command, State Sen. Kevin Parker, may be able to cobble together enough votes to pass the bill.'

Smith Will Allow Senate Vote on Bill to Require Term Limits Referendum

Now you know why Bloomberg pumped money into the state Republicans...

Can't believe it but we have a so-called Gang of Four - Ruben Diaz, Sr., Pedro Espada, Carl Kruger, and HIRAM MONSERRATE threatening to support continued Republican control of the State Senate.

WHY? They feel there should be a Latino Majority Leader. (Feel free to give your own interpetation).

We tenants consider them them turncoat Democrats and need to hear from you. They know all too well that if the Republicans remain in control of the Senate because of their treachery no pro-tenant bill will ever see the light of day, and any tenat protection laws will be phased out.

All other laws not paid for by lobbists will also never see the light of day.

Mr. Smith goes to Albany to end some of the corruption.

Push this referendum bill Malcolm. The Republicans blew every opportunity to oppose change to term limits, but the Commissar controlled them by feeding their greed.

Let the Republicans sit in the corner for several generations until they figure out where to purchase a spine (that attaches to a brain).

Taxpayer, I agree wholehardly, but we have four Dems going against Malcolm Smith and wanting to give the power back to Republicans and that's why we call them traiters. If anyone prefers a lesser charge how about blackmailers?

Hiram already said he would support Smith, so your fear is unfounded.

Queens Crapper, hope your info is very, very recent. I have trusted him for years and campaigned for him even though he's not in my district.

Our fears were not unfounded. Hopefully they are getting their senses back.

Monserrate Supports Smith As Dem. Leader

Will Smith, the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", is going to run against Bloomberg? I didn't even know he lived in New York! I'd definitely vote for him instead of Bloomberg!

This is a silly article. Neither Smith or Silver, (or the Governor, who has veto power) support the bill, so if they approve of it moving forward, they know it does not have the votes.

It's irrelevent anyways, because it would not apply retroactively.

All the bill says is that changes to term limits must be by referendum. Whether they support it or not, they would force people to vote on it and show who the real pigs are in the assembly and senate. Furthermore, it would not have to be retroactive...the next election is a year away.

Will Smith challenge Bloomy? I'd like to see that movie. (forgive the punny headline)

Fine by me!
