Quaker Meeting House being upgraded

After 314 years, it’s time for a spruce up — and that’s what’s happening at the Quaker Meeting House in Flushing.

The wood-shingled house of worship is covered in protective netting for $660,000 in upgrades, including a new roof, restoration of the Yankee gutters and rebuilding of the porch. That work is expected to be completed soon.

Work is underway on Quaker Meeting House

According to Linda Shirley, a meeting house trustee, interior work, which can be done through the winter, will center on adding braces to the support beams and rafters, which have slowly pulled apart. Next spring, outdoor repairs will wind up the project with repointing the building.

Work began in September and was delayed somewhat after the porch, built in the mid-1800s, was ripped up. “They found original flooring underneath and had to bring in an archeologist,” Shirley said. “The porch will be totally restored.”

Maybe they will find an old coal celler and it magically becomes a stop on the underground railroad, the holy grail of history as far as the pols are concerned..

How about 'Bone' House around the corner, Terri?

Why are you people so cynical? Isn't it great that what is probably the most significant landmark in Queens is getting the attention it deserves?

And exactly who is getting the tax funded dollars to renovate the meeting house? Illegal Aliens. The Quakers will not use American workers.

go check for your self if you don't believe me. You will not see an American citizen working there.

A few years ago there was a theft of a head stone from their grave yard. now why do I think it was one of the Quaker women who has an antique business who stole it to sell it? Because she's been pilfering items from the meeting house for her antique business for years.

This is just silly. I'm a Quaker and this is just complete misinformation.

Anonymous Quaker, I completely agree. Here's a second Quaker backing you up. It's not necessary or nice to instigate things like this. Try making the world a better place instead. Btw, I think the renovation is great. It's apparently much needed.
