Squirrel thief in Sunnyside

From Let's Meet Up in Queens:

Just a little warning for fellow Sunnyside Gardens' residents. A hungry, brazen, and resourceful squirrel has broken into at least 2 kitchens by eating/ripping through window screens to get at food sitting on kitchen counters (even sealed food) within the last week.

Sunnyside Gardens' Squirrel - Breaking, Entering, and Eating

My, my. At least it's just squirrels and not skunks, raccoons and feral cats like they're having a problem with in the Bronx.

If it was outside NYC, I'd say a hunting license (season opened 9/1) and an air pistol - but all air pistols/rifles are illegal in NYC.

Oh - and squirrels do make good eating. Taste like - no, not chicken - rabbit. Figure 2 for a family of 3

Obviously that resourceful squirrel has a larger brain capacity than the last poster.

How about keeping inviting food off the windowsill and getting stronger screens.

Gotta admire those bushy tails
who often show more sense than humans.

What....maybe they should get on a welfare line or go on food stamps?

Call up LPC and see if they're allowed in a landmark district.

We have roving bands of feral cats in Astoria.

What, you don't like squirrel? The DO taste good (NOT kidding). They DO taste exactly like rabbit.

I know - if iy's not beef, chicken, pork, lamb or fish you don't eat it.

LOTS of people eat squirrel. The season opened Sept1

Squirrels are a protected species under New York State law.

Penalties can range up to $10,000!

Try eating rats.
They taste more like chicken than beef. Roaches are also very nourishing. (Heh, heh, heh)!

I just love eating squirrel haters!

"protected species" just means one that has a closed season or a bag limit at least part of the year. A "Non protected" species is a species that can be taken at any time of the year with no bag limit.

"The few unprotected species include porcupine, red squirrel, woodchuck, English sparrow, starling, rock pigeon, and monk parakeet"

The squirrel hunting season map is here:

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/29460.html

You will notice that the entire state, except for NYC/Long Island has had an open season since the 1st of September. Long Island opens Nov 1 (for all intents, NYC doesn't open)

I don't hate them - I actually think they are cute, and when I had a choice of what kind of tree to plant in my yard, it was (old house) a black walnut, and at this house will be a hickory, so that they have lots to eat.

Been a few years since I went squirrel hunting, but

That squirrel hunter sounds a little squirrely-brained to me!

How about taking out a license to bag some crooked pols?

Opps....just kidding...a joke folks....not promoting shooting Katz, Stavisky, Crowley or any other sub species!
