Henry Z. Steinway passed away yesterday at the age of 93.
From Steinway & Sons website:
In 1955, Henry Ziegler Steinway, great grandson of founder Henry E. Steinway, became the last family member to lead the firm. Henry began his career at the Steinway factory in Long Island City, learning the skills of craftsmanship passed down by his forefathers. With endless energy, passion and talent, Henry transformed his vision into continued improvements to the manufacturing process, achieving unprecedented growth for the company and making the greatest piano in history shine brighter than ever. Today, Henry is a legendary figure, universally admired and respected throughout the music industry.
The NY Times has a nice obituary.
Requiescat in pace.

Rest In Peace! You will always be admired. We are thankful for your profound contributions to American society and worldwide. Your spirit will live on in the hands of pianists, amongst others.
It would be a fitting tribute for the LPC to finally landmark the row of Steinway workers' houses in Astoria.
A heavenly rest to you
Henry Z. Steinway.
And I'm quite sure
that the official piano forte
up there is a Steinway!
All things music flows from the hand of the craftsman
For without their work
A composer's thoughts would be as fleeting as a birdsong
An artist's talent would remain forever untried.
Interesting to compare the record of the early families that came to Queens and INVESTED into a community on the long term, in stark contrast to those today who MILK it for the SHORT term.
Wow, I am really sadly moved. I studied piano for 14 years, and have a very special place in my heart for a Steinway. Rest in Peace good sir.
