New York State sends residents e-mail alerts when severe thunderstorms loom in an area but not when a registered sex offender moves into a community.
Two Queens lawmakers want that to change.
"It wouldn't cost the taxpayers a dime," said City Councilman Joseph Addabbo.
Queens politicians pushing state for a sex offender alert system
Addabbo (D-Howard Beach) joined with Assemblyman Rory Lancman (D-Fresh Meadows) last week to call for passage of a stalled bill that would notify parents when a sex offender moves into an area, over the same system used for thunderstorms or potential flooding.
State Sen. Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) introduced a bill two years ago to use the state emergency communications network to update residents via e-mail or text message when a registered sex offender moves into their zip code.
Lancman, sponsor of an Assembly version of the bill, said Klein's legislation has been "bottled up" in committee by the Senate's Republican leadership.
Addabbo, who is challenging veteran GOP state Sen. Serphin Maltese this fall, said the need for such "real-time" alerts is great in Queens, which is home to almost a third of the city's 3,260 known sex offenders, state records show.
The highest concentrations are in East Elmhurst, Far Rockaway and Ridgewood, where Addabbo and Lancman held a news conference Friday.
Well, this is rather timely, considering one of yesterday's posts.

How about an alert when a developer is ready to assault a block?
Why is it that a developer's rights are always important, and a homeowner's is not (except of course, when it comes to encouraging development as when a local homeowner does somthing stupid like fighting landmarking. Then the press is all over the local nut job building him up and encouraging his antics by getting quotes.)
Excellent idea! And while they're at it, why is it that in the 1990s I could enter a building complaint online, but now I have to call 311? Aren't we supposed to be moving forward, not backward with all this technology at our disposal?

Seems like Maltese has been trying to protect his protege, Gallagher, from any repercussions for his savage, depraved sexual assault. Gallagher is the savage, depraved one. Not Maltese. Maltese just cheers on the assault and protects his dear friend.
Who will warn neighborhood residents when Gallagher is seen using his right hand to keep "vindicating" himself in front of people?
Addabbo or Maltese the Gallagher mentor? I'll take Addabbo.
Hey crap why kiss ass to Addabbo he has not do a single thing to stop overdevelopment. If he wins he will be in office for decades.
And me and all my friends and your friends will be out of here.
I bet you move craper before Addabbo leaves office
More of the same
This fluff piece is a sell out to your community
Senator Maltese been a sponsor of a bill to provide email notification of sex offender moves and enhance Megan's Law protections. The bill is broader than the Klein bill. It has passed the Senate every year, but died in the Assembly. Maybe Assemblyman Lancman can ask why?
"when a local homeowner does somthing stupid like fighting landmarking"
Has your home been landmarked? Are you a homeowner? Don't you belive in property rights or are you a communist?
Landmarking doesn't take your property away from you. And it serves the greater good by preserving neighborhood pride and aethetics. It actually increases the value of the property most of the time, too.

Really?
A city councilman challenging a long-sitting GOP state senator - in one of the races Democrats have tapped as a priority - let his registration as a lawyer lapse, The Post has learned.
Joseph Addabbo, who's taking on state Sen. Serphin Maltese in the 15th Senate District in Queens, didn't renew his state registration when it expired in May 2007.
Addabbo said he has not practiced law since elected to the council in 2001, although the firm of Addabbo and Greenberg listed him as a partner on its Web site until last night.
The reregistration costs $350 every two years, and all lawyers must file the paperwork with the Office of Court Administration, even if they're not actively practicing, but plan to do so in the future.
The OCA gives lawyers a grace period of several months, and also sends out a few reminder notes, but Addabbo is well past that period.
Lawyers face disciplinary action, including suspension of their licenses for not reregistering.
Officials with the Appellate Division Second Department, which covers Queens, said they usually try to track down lawyers for payment before any disciplinary action is taken.
Addabbo, who will be term-limited out of the council at the end of 2009, is running in one of the most closely watched Senate races around the state, as the GOP clings to a one-vote majority.
The Web site for the law practice Addabbo worked at with his brother listed the councilman as one of its partners until last night, and featured his picture with those of the firm's other partners on the site's home page.
Addabbo told The Post the lapsed registration was an oversight - and his name on the Web site was an administrative mistake.
"One issue when I was campaigning back in 2001 [was] I said I'd be a full-time council member," he said, adding that when he won, "I told my brother I would retire from the firm.
If I was hiring him to be my lawyer, that might concern me. But I am not.
"If I was hiring him to be my lawyer, that might concern me. But I am not."
So you hold elected officials to a lower standard than private citizens?
Where does it say you have to have a valid lawyer's license in order to hold public office?
If he was practicing law without a license, I could see the concern. But this is just the Post trying to dig up something that isn't there.
"Where does it say you have to have a valid lawyer's license in order to hold public office?"
It doesn't. But if you are an admitted attorney you should stay in good standing or retire. You can't hold yourself out as both being a partner in a firm and as not practicing because you're a full-time city councilman. How much would you want to bet that he's recvied refferal fees for work he's sent to his "brother's" firm?
Anyone can receive a referral fee. Even a non-attorney.
"Anyone can receive a referral fee. Even a non-attorney."
No, pinky, that's not true. It's a good thing you dropped out of college and couldn't get into law school.
Sex offenders should be housed on Plum Island, away from families with children:
http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/site_main.htm?modecode=19400000
seems like serph's staffers have too much time on their hands.
A snake in the grass do nothing politician. Funny how he has come out of hiding now that he is running for another do-nothing spot. A big talker and do nothing, just like his pop was. Ever notice that his family name is plastered all over southern Queens? A bridge, a school, a senior center/health clinic...free advertising...how could you not recall his name?
They are a dime a dozen--- phonies and cheats all the way.
So he promised to be a full-time councilman - i guess he can do that while making $105,000 per year. But what will happen when (if) he gets elected to the state senate and has to take a $25,000 plus pay cut? Will he resume his law practice? If so, he'd better pnoy-up the $350 and also make sure he gets those mandatory CLE credits.
What does Addabbo think of Minority leader of the State Senate strong arming fund raisers
If Smith belonged to the mob he be arrested for extortion.
Then will Addabbo support registering ex city councilman Dennis P. Gallagher as a sex offender ?
He admitted to "forcibly touching"
his victim in court.
How come he gets to walk?
Oh, forget about it.
That was just a rhetorical question.
And that bald rapist gets to keep his city pension.
Oh, if this were only Sicily
in the old days and Don Ciccio
was still alive.
We'd see some real justice dispensed.
Someone should as Weiner and the other citywide candidates if Gallager should get his pension.
or if anyone who is forced out of office on corruption should get a pension
