City denies parade permit for American group

The Sons of the Revolution are stalled in their efforts to hold the 225th anniversary parade on November 22, a Saturday. The New York City Police Department, which has jurisdiction over parades in the city, turned down the organization's application for a parade on Broadway from City Hall to the Battery.

Sons of Revolution Appeal City's Denial of Parade Permit

"I'm concerned that every imaginable ethnic group gets to celebrate their pride, every year, on the main thoroughfares of this city. But we're not allowed to celebrate the end of the war that formed this nation and ensured our liberty as Americans. We only have this parade once every 25 years," the executive director of the Sons of the Revolution, Richard Gregory, said.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Bloomberg said that City Hall has no jurisdiction over parades in New York City, and that appeals of denied applications must be directed to the NYPD. Mr. Gregory said that the organization has formally filed an appeal with the police department's Investigation Review Section. As of last night, a spokesman for the NYPD said the Chief of the Department was reviewing the matter.

An editorial in The New York Sun last year reported that the city hosts annual parades such as the Million Marijuana March, as well as parades honoring Haiti, Turkish-American relations, and Philippine independence. In the past year, the Hare Krishna parade marched down Fifth Avenue. The largest parade in New York City occurs every June, when Puerto Ricans converge in Manhattan for their annual parade.

The Sons of the Revolution's frustration also stems from the fact that the city pulled out the stops for its last Evacuation Day parade on November 26, 1983, the event's bicentennial. The parade route was even longer in 1983: It started on Walker Street at Broadway and ended at the Battery.

Get those Sons of the Revolution to parade on bikes, then the NYPD thugs can just clothesline the crap right out of them.

Our politicians and the NYPD are no longer interested in anything involving our "founding fathers", i.e. "dead white males". The Sons of Revolution are, like, so yesterday, or something.

Our "founding fathers" (Madison, Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, etc.) embedded the Constitution with mechanisms to thwart the tendency of the political class to usurp power — to become a permanent elite lording over pauperized subjects, as was the norm in Europe at the time.

But our current crop of politicians have found a way to circumvent all this - they simply decided to elect a "new people".

Million Marijuana March, Haitian parade, Turks, Filipinos, Hare Krishnas, all "Sons of the Tweeded". They are deemed "acceptable" by our political overlords.

Sons of the Revolution - that's yesterday's history, can't milk any votes out of them, they're out!

Madison, Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, George Washington, all rolling in their graves!

The NYPD knows there won't be any rioting, looting, civil disobedience, cries of racism, or civil right marches if they deny this red-blooded, tax paying,
God fearing, family-oriented, working class, pro-USA group a parade.

Perhaps a recreation of the Boston Tea Party is in order. We can dump urine on One Police Plaza and make it the 1PP party!

I like how the mayor says he has no influence over the police department. The city's chart of organization says otherwise.

So, who appoints the Police Commissioner? Who determines the NYPD budget?

What is this horse's ass Commissar Death and Taxes thinking when he spews lies like this?

Kelly: Issue the permit. There is a First Amendment permitting peaceable assembly.

Kelly: Don't you obey the Commissar by shitting on the constitution like he does.

Not sure I understand the point of the previous 2 comments. If it's the Saturday before Thanksgiving, so what?

WTF? Hey mayor cocksucker go fuck yourself again. Every freak in this city gets to march and these people are not able to get a permit for a fucking parade on Broadway on a Saturdaywhen the fucking place is emty. WTF is going on here?

We have some of the worst congestion around Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Not the best time to ask for a parade permit. Also the cops are preparing or the Thanksgiving day parade. I don't think there is any tweeding conspiracy going on here. Tweed would be good to wear in November -- it will probably be cold.

Try reading the article before commenting.

"A representative of the Patrol Borough Manhattan South rejected the application on the grounds that the "proposed activity and surrounding events will substantially or unreasonably interfere with traffic in the area contiguous to the parade route."

And? We have congestion every weekend in the summer but we hand out street fair permits left and right.

The city should be promoting this "once every 25 years" event as a tourist event and make money off it.

Do you actually live here? There is no congestion problem the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Most people leave Wednesday night.

Every 1 here knows me by having "radical" views and standing up for "illegal immigrants." I was even told that I only comment on issues when race/immigration happens to be mentioned. In this case, there should be a march - If there is... I will be there. If there is not a march.. I think we should show up and march - bring a copy of the U.S. constitution and do not demand your damn right to march. March without the consent of the police. Use the constitution before you lose it. When you ask your government for a "permit" in order to exercise your constitutional right - it has become a lost cause.

"The purpose of government is to enable the people of a nation to live in safety and happiness. Government exists for the interests of the governed, not for the governors. As Benjamin Franklin wrote, "In free governments the rulers are the servants and the people their superiors and sovereigns." The ultimate powers in a society, therefore, rest in the people themselves, and they should exercise those powers, either directly or through representatives, in every way they are competent and that is practicable." - Jefferson
