From "Flood Plan is in Place", printed in the Times Newsweekly, 6/12/08:Friendly reminders
Common sense advice was issued to homeowners by [Jennifer] Manley on what to do in the aftermath of serious water damage.
Manley recommended taking photos of the entire affected area, keeping track of saved receipts which can be used to purchase replacement items, avoid contaminants when cleaning up and contacting one's insurance company as soon as possible.
Thanks, Jen, now here's some friendly reminders for you to bring back to the Mayor.
- We have had no infrastructure improvements since last year's floods.
- We already have had several strong storms this year, and it's not even summer yet.
- Our rezoning still has not happened; we are at 4 years and counting.
- Overdevelopment in Queens has not slowed down any.

Hello homeowners... Sweep your sidewalks and gutters. Stop washing your garbage down the block! It won't solve the problem completly, but it will help. When the gutters have to deal with your garbage and leaves it can't deal with the water. And before you say it... yes, you are allowed to wash your sidewalks, but you MUST sweep up the garbage first!!
So, that's what Manley has been doing lately. She studying her stupidity role. She was so good at stupid last year during and after the flooding, but then her stupidity was revealed for all to see. DEP admitted (despite her efforts to keep it secret) that the long-neglected infrastructure couldn't handle the very ordinary heavy rain, and it was the city's fault.
This year, she wants to get ahead of the stupidity curve. She's setting it up that flood victims failed to properly prepare.
Well, Manley, you and Parvizi will be left back again. Neither of you see ready to graduate from even stupidity school.
Your thesis should now be: How to know nothing and still have a well paid lickspittle lackey job for a moron.

You should feel lucky if your new neighbor even says that much.
Usually I get a shrug or giggle when I am hosing down my sidewalk and suggest they do the same.
Out of sheer embarrassment, I usally have to hose their Q-tips and chicken bones into the gutter.
The usual pattern is after six or ten years, they finally figure things out, usualy a few months before they move.
Three months later we are once again at square one.
I feel that I have taught American sanitation practices to at least four different nationalities.
Maybe a tweeder politican can give me a community service grant.
Manley is making the rounds pushing that developer land grab in Willets Point.

Boy what a crew they have up in the Community Assistance Unit. That entire office is a dysfunctional and poor attempt at PR. They never help anyone and all they do is promote the Mayor's BS spin.

I agree. Obviously there is only so much the city can do but there is a lot that residents can do preemptively to prevent flooding. I can't tell you how many residents go "gee why didn't I think of that" when some of the suggests like Manley made are said.
People don't realize their options and she is not a superhero who can solve problems in a heartbeat. No one's like that.

The tired-a$$ cranks of Queens should stop making personal attacks against people who work for the government and start taking a little personal responsibility (i.e., leave staff alone, keep your trash off the street, stop paving over your lawns and stop renting your house to 12 tenants). Your anger and misogyny are not helping and only distracting from the issue. Offer some solutions, like cntrysigns did, and even the original poster did.
The people posting here are not the ones who are running Queens into the ground.

Come on, you politicans are the ones feeding the people this horsecrap that a home is their castle.
You can do public education programs if you can tear yourself away from the developers.
What ever happened to do not litter campaigns. I know. Its a quality of life no win situation that will pit the old against the new residents.
And we don't want the public to get upset now - it just might stir them up to look at things.
Naw, you let them rot, like their communities. Besides, if you are letting the developers have their way, the less you know about what is going on out there, the better for all concerned.
