ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- The bridge that leads to the airport named for John F. Kennedy is getting renamed for his younger brother, Robert F. Kennedy, the former New York senator assassinated in 1968.
The state Assembly has given final legislative approval to rename the Triborough Bridge, following Senate approval in April. Gov. David Paterson planned to sign the measure to call it the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, spokesman Errol Cockfield said. The bill memo notes "minimal budgetary impact" for the cost of changing signs.
The Triborough Bridge, opened in 1936, is actually a complex of three bridges, a viaduct and 14 miles of approach roads. It connects Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens.
Politicians love to memorialize each other. We like our bridge's name the way it is, thanks. This is the kind of thing that should be subject to a referendum.

This is bullshit.
Irish polticians and African American ball players may be fine people, but naming everything in sight for political agendas is simply BS.
Remember Ave of the Americas? How about all those parks named after forgotten WW I veterans.
They should just leave well enough alone.
Now this new Govoner is making us "Bent over" too ?
THIS STINKS JUST LIKE THE NEW GOVONERS LATEST DECISIONS!!!!!
Q-
What's a politician from Mass-hole having to do with a NYC Bridge??
RFK was a senator from NY.
need to keep the camel lot charisma alive. but let's not discuss actual accomplishments of the kennedy's. My senior senator has been doing he can to turn the USA into a socialist outpost.
JFK would be highly distressed at what we've become.
Bobby Kennedy was a hero and he died trying to make this country better, to make life better for YOU and your family.
This just confirms to me that my neighbors of western Queens are idiots and unpatriotic.
Bobby Kennedy was a hero and he died trying to make this country better, to make life better for YOU and your family.

So what? Roosevelt had nothing to do with Roosevelt Island, but we still respect the man.
The point is the we loose a sense of place by renaming places after politcal agendas. I remember the communists and tin-pot dictators around the world used to wipe out history with their own stamp of names.
Queensboro will someday the the Hillary Bridge - you wait and see.
And oh yes, I'm from eastern Queens.
Are we fighting the eastern vs. western Queens war again?
"Bobby Kennedy was a hero died trying to make this country better"

BS!
Bobby Kennedy tried to make life better for tweedy people who were comfortable living in the 3rd world cesspools they created NOT US !!
Bobby was behind the Immigration Act of 1965 that in 5 years turned NYC bankrupt and into crap by bringing useless tweedys here housing and feeding them with out tax $$$ !!!
They were all to stupid, drunk to work some were criminal's and sex offenders facing firing squads!!!
There offspring now make up 90% of our prison population in Rikers
Remember the big Mac Bond's fiasco to bail it out ?
Bushwick went the fastest !
I lived on Dekalb and Evergreen.
The new people were throwing the garbage out the 3rd floor window's into yards and playing Bongo's in the street 2 AM. All were on welfare !!!
Bobby Kennedy tried to make life better ?
Gimma a break, he was just as distructive as his brother Ted !!
Likley why he got "taken out"
-Joe
BTW if Ted was so smart he'd be President by now. Wasny he the won that took tha girl for a drunken joyride a 2 AM ??
"Bobby Kennedy tried to make life better for tweedy people who were comfortable living in the 3rd world cesspools they created NOT US !!"
Well then naming the gangplank to the borough of the tweeded after him sounds perfect.
This bridge leads to LGA, not JFK airport. Stupid reporters! Send the Kennedys back to the Bay State!
Serious question - Why do our representatives get to make these decisions with no input from us? is there anything we can do to prevent this from happening? A petition or something? Karen
What a shock to hear so many JPCA/ Republicans trashing Robert F. Kennedy who was a Senator from NYS and was assassinated.
He was a great American and a hero to many. Him and his brother JFK (A true American hero) worked to make this country a better place for all of us.
By the way genius my family are the people I guess you refer to as "tweedy" except they came over in the late 1920's and had all their sons serve in WW2, and later on 3 of their grandsons in Vietnam and most recently 2 Great Grand Children in the First Gulf War.
When your family has done as much as mine as (on bth my mothers and fathers side) to serve this country you get back to me.
Those "tweedys" pay their taxes and serve their country with honor and distiction.
If your to cheap to pay your fair share and make sure soldiers and their families get taken care of, schools are built, Seniors aren't living in the streets and get proper medical care then maybe you should move to anothere country that doesn't care about how its citizens are taken care of.
Mr. Mojo Risin
Karen
"A petition or something?"
Good luck with that one!
Yo ho ho Mojo
We are just about all immigrant offspring here, so you cannot bullshit us.
And if you do not see a difference between the immigrant of 1908 and 2008, well, then there is no point 'teaching a pig to fly.'
I wastes our time and just annoys the pig.
You cannot ask these legislators to do anything.
In a one party state, you lose that leverage.
Mojo thinks his family has done more than any of the rest of the families in Queens have done. All of us had members of our families serve in this country's wars. As for his point about the tweedys he has no point. No one here is against using tax money for the things he lists. The problem is when your tax money gets used to tweed (i.e. taking care of the best interests of politicians and not the taxpaying public).
Could someone please define TWEEDY please? Is it as blatantly racist and classist as I think it might be?
Oh, and RFK started out as a hardnosed machine politician and power broker, but after his brother's death he reinvented himself morally and became a genuinely great man. Go listen to his remarks after the death of Martin Luther King. For those of you who are believers it might remind you of someone. That he was killed young, that we were deprived of his service for another twenty or thirty years, that Nixon became president in his place, was nothing less or other than a disaster for our country.
That said, I don't know what connection he had to the Triboro Bridge. Which, incidentally, was the heart of Robert Moses' empire. The same Moses who truly almost destroyed the city.
"Bobby Kennedy was a hero and he died trying to make this country better, to make life better for YOU and your family. ..."

" ... Oh, and RFK started out as a hardnosed machine politician and power broker, but after his brother's death he reinvented himself morally and became a genuinely great man. Go listen to his remarks after the death of Martin Luther King. ..."
Brilliant.
The Kennedys are all about money and power. Lots of money and savage use of power.
It was this RFK who, as US Attorney General, ordered the wiretapping of the same Martin Luther King over whose dead body he pretended sorrow.
To fully understand the power of lying propaganda, observe the number of African Americans who will announce their undying love for the very man who unleashed the full force of the FBI on to MLK. And who hounded this MLK and the entirety of the Civil Rights Movement during those years.
The list is long, but it was Democrats who wanted to smash the Civil Rights Movement. It was Democrats who unleashed the dogs, who used batons and firehoses, and dynamite on any "uppity black" who tried to shake the jackboots off his or her neck.
Who said: "Segregation now; segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!" Was he a Republican or a Democrat? Hint: He was George Wallace, Governor of Alabama. Bill Clinton's political hero was (and remains) Arkansas Senator William J. Fulbright, the arch segregationist and - here's a real surprise - a Democrat. Fulbright hated Jews, Blacks, Catholics, Italians, Eastern Europeans, and all Northerners. Did I say he was a Democrat? He led the fight against Civil Rights for Blacks. Oh, yeah, it was the Republican Party that passed the Civil Rights Law.
So, Mr. Governor, the first Black Governor of NY State, do go ahead and demonstrate to the world your ignorance of the history you say plagues you. Go honor one of the savages who tried to make it impossible for you to even vote, much less ever be a Governor.
Hail RFK. Show some true ignorance! Oh, yeah! RFK was a DEmocrat.
"Could someone please define TWEEDY please? Is it as blatantly racist and classist as I think it might be?"
Yes, that is exactly what it is. Making people, usually ethnic, lower class people, dependent on government handouts; in return, the politicians get their votes and they get to stay in power. Look up "Boss Tweed" for historical context.
Did someone ask about 'tweeding?'
Time to brush off this thread again. Check out the dialogue from gangs of NY. Great it appears on an Ackerman thread, one of the biggest tweeders in Queens.
http://queenscrap.blogspot.com/2008/02/open-letter-to-us-rep-gary-ackerman.html
BTW, Queens Crap gave the verb 'to tweed' to the English language. Use it frequently. Its fun.
What does the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and Tunnel Authority have to say about all this?
How stupid.
Not to worry folks it'll still be called the Triboro Bridge
just like avenue of The Americas is still called 6th Avenue!
The Kennedy clan already has an airport named after their womanizing son....eh miss Monroe?
(Someday the real cause of your death might be revealed).
Hey, "Pinky" Gallagher also likes his "womanizing".
What can we appropriately name after a rapist?
"Serious question - Why do our representatives get to make these decisions with no input from us? is there anything we can do to prevent this from happening? A petition or something?"
Karen, welcome to representative democracy! I think we need some participatory democracy - real democracy that is. We live in a system where we cast our votes in a "hopeful" attempt that these elite bastards actually listen to the working class. Time to wake up America. They raise the metro fares in Europe, Latin America, etc - and they react by torching buses and trains (we just shop). Silly consumer driven society.
Sal from Ridgewood
Bobby was a "trusted advisor" to JFK, and his fingerprints were on the Bay of Pigs fiasco as well as the "missle crisis."
While he was in the Administration, aside from investigating everyone named "Hoffa" on the planet, he also authored the quote:
"We're not going to drop one more bomb in Vietnam than is neccessary to accomplish our mission."
That set the tone for a decade of carnage.
Bobby ran for Senate against Ken Keating, a popular New York Republican (in an era when there were Liberal Republicans like Jacob Javits) who blew the whistle on the Soviet missles in Cuba.
His connection with New York is that he was born in a Hospital in New York City and he had a change of clothes in an apartment here.
When he ran, he used his brother's tombstone as a soap box. It was pure payback.
After less than half a term in the Senate, during which time he accomplished nothing, he got back on the granite soap box to run for President.
He made great, stirring speeches, which when you boiled the fat out of them, said nothing.
And then he got shot, and died - 40years ago today.
This was supposed to be a photo op for Hillary.
Booby Kennedy was a good man.
He cared about others, unlike you people whom care only of yourselves.
Take them home -country mama - to the place where they belong- West Virginia- take my neighbors-take them home - to where they belong.
Urban Rednecks - thats what YOU are!
Daddy Joe Kennedy attempted to institute the creation of his own FAMILY DYNASTY to lord over all.
That principle is both
anti-democratic and blatantly un-American.
We fought a bitter war at the dawn of our nation, to rid ourselves of the succession of monarchs and the divine rights of kings (like Joseph P. Kennedy and his family/clan).
Let's stop canonizing them all
as a bunch of flawless saints.
Some Kennedys had their good points along with their bad.
Mamma Rose suffered the most
at the mercy of that SOB husband of hers.
She alone (G-d knows)deserves sainthood
The Clinton's just tried to start their own DYNASTY but Hillary just got schlonged!
I love America.
Eventually the sleepiest of us voters wakes up and kicks ass!
Ummmm...........with you whole dynasty theory......
Did you forget the fucking Bush family?
The Bush's have done more harm to this country then any political family in US history.
You want to talk about dynasty - dont leave out the worst of them all because you are a biased Republican.
No my fine idiot, I did not forget the Bush dynasty. They're scum!
I vote independent.
I'm not tied to (or "tweeded" by) either the Democrats or Republicans who are running for office!
But I'm f-----g weary of hearing that scurrilous Kennedy family being constantly deified by the likes off ignorant posters such as yourself!
And wipe the "Hershey" off your lips...you've been on the
"down low" far too long!
Do you genuflect in front of a likeness of JFK on hanging on your wall?
"I think you are blind to the fact that the hand you hold is the hand that holds you down." - Alex Alexakis, Everclear ("Everything to Everyone")
Applies to all tweeded members of society, especially in relation to the Kennedys.
The Republicans in Middle Village are the among the 27% who still support President Bush.
If that doesn't tell you how they think or function I don't know what does.
By the way I wasn't saying my family did more than anyone else's but probably more than the author who attacked immigrants did.
Mr. Mojo Risin
Triboro/RFK no matter it's name, it is still a beautiful marvel at night.
What is a 'TWEEDY'
I would like to understand ypur comments.
thanks...
