Truth about debate no-shows revealed

Anthony Como and Elizabeth Crowley used the excuse that they were attending a newspaper round table discussion at the Queens Ledge on Tuesday night as the reason for cancelling on their commitment to participate in a debate at Our Lady of Hope in Middle Village. The other two candidates, Charles Ober and Tom Ognibene, were also asked to attend the newspaper's event at 7:30, but both stood firm and chose to go to the debate. Ober made an appointment at the newspaper for 9:30 that same evening and Ognibene went at noon yesterday. So the 7:30 time was not a "do-or-die" for either Crowley or Como. It's obvious that they don't have the cojones to face tough questions.

Crowley cannot handle issue-oriented questions, nevermind straightforward questions about her indiscretions past and present. Como is a pretty dim bulb as well, and it is becoming more and more obvious that he will act as the sacrificial lamb for Serf Maltese who made a deal with Joe Crowley to give Dizzy Lizzy the seat. Como is only in the race to split the GOP vote. This is why he didn't show at the debate either.

This entire race is a farce with the people of the district being played for fools - as usual. The voters in Maspeth, Middle Village, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood and Glendale better wake up and smell the coffee, and do so fast.

With all due respect and affection to Queens Crap, why the reference to "tough questions" as though tough questions make a debate unfair or one sided?

This pair of lazy, dishonest, very stupid and overly ambitious wannabe electeds are just as eligible as a presidential candidate for any issue or character question asked by any voter - even if the voter is a member of some particular "hated" organization.

Who cares about their tender feelings? If the worst happened, and either were actually elected, how would either face an angry constituent who demanded to have a problem handled and solved immediately?

By going over to some idiotic newspaper to have their picture taken? By looking at the ceiling while thinking about dumbass things?

This pair wants on our payroll. They want an office and staff. They want to be taken seriously.

Well, who cares what either of them wants? Why did they both ditch the questions from voters? Those questions are the job interview.

They want the job. They want the pay. But, they refuse to be interviewed by the prospective employer?

Which voter gets away with that? Which union member - who is being forced to spend time on the bimbo of this pair - would get the job without an interview or positive recommendation?

Dump the pair.

Ognibene and Ober are perfectly suitable candidates to pick from.

Your slip is showing, Crappy. If, as you claim, Como entered the race to split the GOP vote, how is it he announced his candidacy weeks before Ognibene? Nice try.

This proves you wrong: Ognibene wants old job back.

3/14/08: "Tom Ognibene, the former council minority leader, told The Post yesterday he was planning to run.

Other likely candidates include Republican Anthony Como, a lawyer and former Queens prosecutor backed by influential Republican state Sen. Serph Maltese..."

Tell Serf I said hi, and thanks for showing your slip, JD.

It's wonderful to see that the 2 candidates, via Patrick Henry, are admitting that they were too scared to show up to answer these questions. Great job, Crappy!

Oh my God, I just went there, and yup, they are admitting to being cowards! The first honest thing they've done during the entire campaign!

They were tipped off as to what the questions would be yet they still stayed away? Hilarious!

I don't understand what is so wrong about asking Elizabeth about her campaign finance fraud. She misused OUR money.

So these 2 candidates want to be assured that they will be asked softball questions or else they won't show up? I guess that's how the machine works these days.

Anthony No Neck and Dizzy Lizzy need to grow up and face the music. Hiding under Sanchez' desk will not help them.

I look forward to the debate coverage in the Queens Ledge. If there is no coverage, then we'll know this was a conspiracy between Sanchez and the 2 candidates.

Pinky is involved in this. There's no way Sanchez would have bothered to do this otherwise.

BINGO! I'm not looking to tease but I can't say anything just now. I can only confirm this is accurate. To his credit, Gallagher did advise Liz not to accept the invite. He explained that to then back out would cause a greater backlash. The man is a snake, but one that knows the nuances of a campaign.

"Hiding under Sanchez' desk will not help them."

Doesn't that depend on what was going on under the desk, and whether money changed hands?

Does ménage-à-trois sound exciting? A daisy chain?

Oh! Just to imagine it all!

Someone better tell the Ober campaign that Michael Mascetti is working for Crowley to get info from Ober's campaign manager to get back to Crowley. They promised him a lot of money for his nonprofit if he gets info out of the campaign manager and gives it to Crowley.

I got wind of this a few days ago at Crowley's campaign that Michael had told Crowley's people that he had an in with the Ober campaign and that he could get info out of the campaign to give to Crowley and they promised him a lot of money for his non-profit and something about Michael's father needing a job in the union. so beware Ober that this is out there. Can someone please get this message to the Ober People in case he is in contact with them. They need to know about this right away.
