Queens College has inked a deal with an Alabama developer to build and manage the first dormitory on the Flushing campus, officials said.
Capstone Development Corp. will erect the 506-bed dorm on what are now outdoor tennis courts. Capstone also will create 200 parking spaces on campus to accommodate the students.
Historically a commuter school, Queens College has pitched the dorm as a way to compete with Ivy League schools for high-quality students.
Some civic leaders oppose the $72 million project - funded by tax-exempt bonds from the city Housing Development Corp. - because they fear the students living on campus will create more litter, noise and parking woes.

That is what any residential surburanlike neighborhood needs, hundreds of more students in residence and hundreds of more parking spaces.
What will happen when they take a page from NYU and Columbia, and start to buy up the surrounding areas?
C'mon...you gotta be kidding...
Capstone Development Corp. ?
You sure they didn't leave out
an "R" in there somewhere...
like... "CRAPSTONE"?
How sublimely perfect!
This is a City College that serves the people of NYC, specifically of Queens.
In other words this is where the kids that live next door th you will go to college.
Leave it alone already.
Folks living near Queens College put up with blocked driveways, trash stewn front yards, noise,
overburdened sewers and diminished water pressure. We can hardly wait for the bar scene we've been missing all these years.

Since they live next door to me, they don't need to dorm in Flushing. Just as in LIC, this CUNY dorm isn't being built for the kids that already live here.
Queens College has been a commuter school for its entire existence. Why meddle with something that works?
Queens College is an education mill
that, apparently, has the sudden need
to house its pot heads on campus.
Let me know
when you're lighting up fellas.
I'm on a budget and could use a good contact high!
Queens has always had an Ivy league inferiority complex, goib at least back to 1980. They compare themselves to the Ivy league schools. The spent a TON of money luring Dr Gallo (aids) and a few other big name professors, who actually taught NO classes, and never did any real research while there. It's a joke, and my F-I-L was a full Professor there, He said you should see what goes on behind closed doors
Oh - and I forgot to mention Barry Commoner
What a load of crap! Freakin' idiots- just what QC needs- more morons that never leave! Isn't it bad enough that the "sorority" fatties NEVER leave campus?
With respect to the somewhat critical feedback, I think this is a very good idea. There are very few colleges in NYC with dorms except very difficult ones such as NYU and Columbia, or ones that specify in a major (like pre-med).
