Drug sweep at Woodside Houses

Drug Raid in Queens
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Prosecutors have charged 41 people, including several members of the Crips street gang, with selling crack and other crimes at a Queens housing project.

The Queens district attorney, Richard A. Brown, and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly announced the charges against the suspects, mostly men in their late teens or early 20s, on Friday.

During a six-month investigation, undercover officers made 150 purchases of crack, powder cocaine, heroin and marijuana at the Woodside Houses, the authorities said. The complex has 20 buildings with more than 3,400 residents.

Mr. Kelly said the operation “nipped in the bud the emergence of the drug dealers who were peppered throughout the Woodside development.”

Raids resulted in seizures of drugs, cash, guns, bulletproof vests and handcuffs, the authorities said.

Cops cheered in Queens bust
By Jonathan Lemire

Saturday, May 17th 2008, 4:00 AM

Undercover cops have smashed a coalition of drug gangs that terrorized a Queens housing project - to the delight of residents who cheered police when they busted the dealers, authorities said Friday.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the small drug crews, which respected each others' turf within the Woodside Houses, sold more than $250,000 a year of cocaine, crack and marijuana.

"This operation nipped in the bud the emergence of drug dealers who were peppered throughout the Woodside development," said Kelly, standing alongside Queens District Attorney Richard Brown to announce the bust. Undercover officers made nearly 150 small drug buys to painstakingly build their case after surveillance began last November, officials said.

One cop was also able to buy a 9-mm. semiautomatic handgun for $300.

Thirty-six dealers have been arrested, while another five are being sought by authorities, police said. Eight of those in custody are suspected members of the Crips gang, Brown said.

"When the arrests were made, people came out of their apartments in the Woodside Houses and literally applauded the cops," Brown said.

Yea...sure...

Look, I live a block from the Woodside Houses and guess what? The dealers are still selling at the corner.

Just last night I found wrappers from a blunt in my stairwell under the stoop. Every night the boys come out about eleven, and for an hour its party time.

Hey, we must be neighbors. Still waiting for them to clean the 'Latin Kings' scrawl on a number of buildings on the block.

But .. since the buildings are no longer owner occupied, and filled with immigrants, no one will remove it.

The lettering will go only after they fade in about or, say, 10 or 20 years.

In the long term we are all dead, so what's your beef?

I have lived my entire life in a large private development 1 block from the projects.

From the early 1970's Woodside Housing has been the scurge of the neighborhood.

What goes on in & around the projects has ruined an otherwise great neighborhood. The criminal element store their guns & drugs in the mailboxes.

They need to place a satellite police station in there with enough patrol officers to keep law & order there.

maybe if they legalized drugs this would not happen.

THE COPS MIGHT THINK THEY'VE DONE SOMETHING BIG BUT TRUST AND BELIEVE THE BEAT GOES ON IN THE WOODS!! WORK A LITTLE HARDER NYPD BECAUSE YOU DID NOT HIT A HOME RUN AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED THE MAIN PEOPLE ARE LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU

These drug and gun sales didn't start just recently.

So, what delayed the police from enforcing the law long ago?

Bloomberg doesn't care if minorities kill each other; who'll miss them?

Look at this project as a prospective land deal. When the location is "blighted" enough, the city can use eminent domain, give the land to favored developers, and, away we go!
Great word, "Blighted". It's the money word.

Look at the longtime deliberate neglect of Willets Point. Now look at Woodside Houses.

Any difference? Same deliberate, depraved neglect. Same plan to take the land.

There's big money in neglect!

WHAT THE POLICE DID WAS WRONG!!
ALL THESE YOUNG BOYS WAS JUST TRYING TO MAKE MONEY.IT'S NOT LIKE THEY WHERE FORCING PEOPLE TO SMOKE THE DRUGS.WHAT ABOUT THE ONES WHO SMOKE IT THEY'RE STILL RUNNING AROUND THIS HOUSING AREA LOOKIN FOR CRACK. WHAT ARE THE POLICE GOING TO DO ABOUT THAT? HAVE A BUST FOR CRACK HEADS? MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO COMPLAINED WAS ELDERLY AND MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE ARE MIDDLE AGES AND THERE ARE ALOT OF TEENS N YOUNG CHILDREN. SO THE ELDERLY ARE GOING TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLY IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD AND SHOULD LIVE IN A SENIOR CITIZEN BUILDING.

I won't stay anonymous. My name is Reese and I've been living in Woodside for 16 years. Our community is a great community and can become greater if we could just remember to stick together and not allow our enemies to infiltrate us.
To me, it seems that the police has done more harm to us than help us here in Woodside. For them, there's an underlying agenda drive us out of Woodside when most likely they have something to do with the drugs and guns coming in.
Woodside is predominantly Black/Native Americans and the government does not want us here anymore so they are using excuses and lies such as heavy drug dealing and huge incomes being made by young men from these criminal activites. Here in Woodside we get charge with bogus crimes that the average citizen does not. Charges such as trespassing and loitering even though we live in the building.
Around here, several young black men were even forced out of school by prejudice Deans who call the police on them for any small thing they do! Many times they are arrested because the police are fearful.
These young men cannot simply hang out with their friends without being harrassed and accused of doing something criminal. Of course there may be one bad apple in a bunch. That is the case anywhere. But anytime anything that happens in Northern Queens, Woodside Houses is always targeted and it is our innocent youth who are suffering the consequences

I know this comment is late because this drug bust happenend like 8 months ago but this still needs to be said!!! All ya'll that could say that drug dealers need to be set free in the neighborhood and the drug users need to be picked up need to be slapped into some kind of sense. What about saying that all that have to do with these issues needs to be put away and learn the lesson that they need to learn. I work for what I have and what I want. A drug dealer needs to do the same. just like they want everything fast, I do too but common sense tells you in order to stay out of jail or being killed for some stupidness, you need to make money the legal way. Stop being lazy and trying to make a stupid way of living life and making money be valid. I don't know about you but my life deserves the best and that is not living around drugs and guns. Let's get some education and handle ourselves like we got some sense!!!!!

If the police do not want drug dealers in the neighborhoods how about they open a rehab center in the neighborhoods, because as long as there are drug addicts looking for drugs there will be drug dealers. Arrest after arrest does not solve anything as you can see from over the years. So the nypd should try something diferent. Also for the person who said that someone should be slapped in the face, you shouldn't judge anyone becaus you dont know the life they lived and maybe thats the best solution for them. Anyways Tyrone you will be home soon the Princess loves you.

By the way the "princess" that commented on March 19, 2009..... "Anyways Tyrone you will be home soon the Princess loves you" is connected to the following...... Tyrone Williams,* 18, of 35-20 21st Street in Queens, is charged with five counts of third-degree criminal sale of a
controlled substance, one count of criminal sale of a controlled substance on or near school grounds and one count of
third-degree criminal sale of a firearm. Very nice girl..YEAH RIGHT...SSSure. Must miss Tyrome's drug money.

I wish I could nuke that god damn hellhole and relocate all of the decent people there. Drug dealers should be slaughtered unmercifully. My neighborhood is beyond beautiful and safe. Those animals don't venture out of their "hood" because they know they'll be lynched.

i Used to live there, for a few years, went to college, then finally moved in 2009 to another state for a job. but lived there off and on. While I am sure there are some decent people there, and I know quite a few of them, people with families, single mother or married, that place is a rotting cesspool. Though from what I remember last, you no longer see crack vials, empty nickelbag containers strewn around on the stairs or roofs. BUt you do see cigar contents (blunts) and various other crap, the halls always smell like piss, and excrement(that is shit for the uneducated). I rarely had any direct run ins with anyone but then again being over 6'2" built and white and walking with purpose, most of these trollops and degenerates thought I was a cop. Safe to say it was funny in retrospect to observe their behavior when you walk past a group of these animals only to have them go all silent. lawlz were had by me and my friends. But it was obvious that despite all the hush hush, that drugs were dealt, money were exchanging hands, you could tell by the body language, and the grouping of key individuals. truly sad state of events in that neighborhood. All in all, that place is a haven for drugs, prostitution, gang activity. the list goes on! I don't ever see these projects improving, let alone to a point where you don't have to worry about hearing some gun fire in the night because some drug deal went bad, or someone owed ray ray, and coohi bear, or leeroy money or goods. In the wise words of Sgt hicks "Nuke the entire site from orbit--it’s the only way to be sure" Shame that the decent people that DO live there are surrounded by that crap. I hope the NYPD still has a heavy presence there and continues the strangle hold on that neighborhood until the human garbage is pushed out. but that is only a hope, reality doesn't always fit snuggly in that ideal.

Now I believe they have cameras in there, they are coming on my block, this girl a few houses down frm me is a heroin addict CI so her dirty cop protects her, nothing me and the neighbors can do we just get harassed and threatened going on 2 yrs at least. Police won't even take reports frm is,they just say go back in your house, don't talk to each other, you have no proof then when their is video proof of drug deals n harassment the cops said what r u neighborhood watch, mind ur business. I know for a fact the cop has lied on a police report and is dirty protecting his CI. Nothing any of us can do,we're all prepared to get harassed this summer because that is when these pple are at their worst and thanks 2 a dirty cop or 2( I know their names) they do whatever they want, laugh at us,physically assaulted my 1 neighbor as well as myself another time (even though I got arrested even though there was a witness) who according to police I guess doesn't exist cas they refused to take his statement or mention him in the report

I lived in the wood side projects from the age of 5to17. Before that I lived in the Queensbridge projects. I lived an ordinary life with ordinary people as neighbors. I remember Summer's where young men would play drums in the spaces between buildings on hot summer night. My father would have a fit about the noise. Personally I liked it. I never heard a gunshot. I never saw a drug deal. I lived next door to every ethnicity you can imagine.

I can't imagine what happened. We were not rich people my parents both worked my sisters worked and contributed to the household. Yes we were in subsidizied housing but we paid our way. My parents put four daughters through catholic school. Not a cheap endeavor

WHAT HAPPENED??? BTW. Met my husband who lived ther also. We're married 45 years and have five amazing sons

This is funny to me. I work in the mcdonalds no too far from this place. Tbh drug deals and gunfire is nothing new to me. Anywhere you go violence is everywhere. We all know that the group everyone blames I'm this area is Hispanics and blacks or somewhere near that area. You'd be surprised the shit I've seen go down over there. I've seen a dude most well kept man looked like he came home from a decent job sell drugs to kids and not only that he was white. No racism intended to me all races are equally as guilty as the next one. They all have dirt on them. The people who sell drugs I wouldn't call them animals yes some may be difficult than others. But it makes a person equally as bad categorizing someone like that. Not in the sense of drug or gun selling but in the sense that your making yourself look like an ass naming someone who has dirt on them when you also have dirt on yourself. Not all sold can claim they had another choice it is hard out there. Jobs aren't really that easy. It's getting harder. I don't blame them but I do blame the choice they've made. They had other options yes but to some that's the only way Thier kid eats at night. Not a good way but whatever keeps that child alive. You can't judge someone without knowing the situation to me all the people who call those people animals are just the same. Judgement is the reason all types of shit like this happen. I'm Hispanic myself my race sucks just as bad as any other believe me I wanted to punch a spic or two in the face. But that doesn't give me a right to judge another.basic point to me if you gotta do dirt let it be for a good cause if your kid is going hungry and you got no other choice nothing is working out then by all means. We all are human we fight for what we think is right sometimes its not but other times yo can't front(lie) slang for those who might not know although who wouldn't know this time in age. I'm not with drugs if that what you get out this tbh idk if anyone will besides me. To me judgement is what lead everyone and everything to where they are today there's a huge difference between good and bad judgement and in today's time it's basically all bad. You see a man selling drugs. First thought to someone who see themselves higher than that person will think he's up to no good he's a bad guy. Someone who can think like me sees someone who has tried and needs to support something greater than himself and there is always the other thought which is that he is up to no good. And don't think women aren't apart of it either. I know women who deal of apart all races and of all financial classes. My basic point is racism categorization and judgement is what brought this world down and places like this down Idgaf who you are you aren't better then the next person Noone is greater in my eyes to me everyone is equal both in good and bad Noone in this world is a saint. So to all who do judge who do categorize and have racism in their tounge FUCK YOU BOSS.

Just look at the people who live here and you know why its a mess. Its acceptable because they learned it from mom and pop who learned from grandma, and grandpa. Generations of welfare (the family business) and drug dealing.

What Happened! Used to live there back in the day. About the year of 1977 to 1979. I was about 11 years old when mom remarried and we moved to Columbus, Ohio. I missed this place. I remember living at 50-03 apt. 5B. This place was fair and good back then. It just needs better screening. Go over their lease of regulations and go from there. Check backgrounds of each member of family living in the units. Violation of the lease will followed by eviction. Some struggle single mothers, sometimes, I think in ways they are the blame allowing male members to stay, don't want nothing positive out of life, but to live of crimes and violence. I'm sure housing is aware of this by now. Not only that, too many of migration of people living there. Not sure who's good or bad.
