I'm no expert, and death and injuries are serious issues, but I wonder how many deaths and injuries are caused by stupid carelessness. Jumping onto a moving piece of heavy equipment is just plain stupid carelessness.
I've got two words for all most all of the construction
accidents.........CELL PHONES....
Really, stop and look at any construction site,
buildings, road work everywhere people are
talking and not paying attention to what their doing.
A law should be passed not talking and operating tower cranes and bull dozers, etc
And there's that lovely piece in the times today about the developers, unions, etc being upset about the DOB actually enforcing the rules the last few days... these people really have their priorities backwards.
How about workers getting injured because they misunderstood instructions due to not being proficient in English?
If a worker is not proficient in English, because he's an illegal alien or just doesn't understand, then, he should not be hired.
Someone who cannot speak, read or understand English is a danger to all. He cannot warn others of a danger, and he cannot understand warnings of danger to himself.
How about a worker following all the rules that has an accident?
There is a booming construction industry (actually on the early side of a decline) and by law of probability people do get hurt.
In the first gulf war, 90% of the deaths that happened were due to friendly fire.
I am not saying that this is a war or construction accidents are ok, they are not, but this is one of those jobs that does not forgive the slightest mistake.
Everyone has hurt themselves in the smallest construction jobs at home, (who hasnt hit their thumb with a hammer?) this is similar just on a much larger, much more dangerous scale.
This is "Turner Construction" not some crappy Wang development.
I'd also like to ask the question: Why the hell are they working in a residential area of Staten Island at 9:30 at night?
As an individual who workd in the heavy construction trade. I would say that 70% of the workers have issues (drinking, drugs) If they gave these guys a beathalyzer before stepping onto the job site- Most of them would be going home. Remember the news shows showing the construction workers drinking (now the are taking the 6 packs in bags
to the worksite) "No Drinking on the jobsite" is not enforced.
