looks nice. Wonder what they're going to be doing with all the rest of the land? It's a pretty huge place.
given that it has spectacular views someone is going to make a killing building a 30 story condo complex no doubt.
Remember when it was an active base. Parents took me and a friend to see the golden nights jump and to crawl all over some neat tanks and hardware.
Anyone remember when there was a nike base on Francis Lewis and 73rd Ave?
It's a Landmarked site, owned by Parks and FDNY, no one's building a condo.
Don't be so sure of that.
If someone can make money on it, and someone can contribute to the right politicians campaigns, it will happen.
Left NYC 25 years ago, and what I read here tells me anything is possible.
The actual abuse is being committed by Parks & Recreation. In violation of the conveyance agreement, Parks is taking for their own use, buildings which are part of the Historic Trust. These buildings were earmarked for non-profits. For some reason parks is reluctant to provide updates on the RFP, which was issued more than 3 years ago.
Additionally, parks is demolishing the buildings without conducting an evironmental study. Fort Totten is a natural habitat surrounded by water and is home to many species ofmigratory water fowl. Another concern is the safety of trees while the destruction is on going. Parks claims to not have an inventory of trees on the fort. This is very convenient for them; when trees are removed or desrtroyed there will be no record. Please don't allow Parks to destroy Fort Totten. We need preservation, not development.
Can anyone just go into Fort Totten to have a look and walk around? The guards at the gate have never let me through on my bicycle.
The park is open to the public, including those on bikes.
I read somewhere that Parks is going to lease some of the waterfront space for the operation of a reception/catering hall.
for starts they should station the guards at the front gate somewhere else to make visitors feel more welcome.
They are taking down buildings that are not landmarked.
Some boxy 50's housing units, none of the cool, olde stuff.
The only buildings that are slated for destruction at this point are the "newer" housing units, which are actually in worse condition thatn the "older" houses. Some of these buildings at the south side of the base have already been taken down.
