I think it's wrong to call it a "hoax." Desperate people need help. If they tell lies on the way to getting it, in my opinion that doesn't make them any less deserving of sympathy.
Please explain...why was the cab driver arrested? Isn't putting the baby in a safe place (firehouse) better than a garbage bag? At least they did a merciful thing and the baby is alive and well. That's what counts. Why discourage desperate people from being humane?
New York does have a "Safe Haven Law" where you can leave a baby at a hospital, police station or firehouse. But the only person(s) alllowed to leave their baby at the above places are the mother (or father?).
Perhaps the cab driver was arrested because he lied about the facts.
Actually you can not just leave the baby anywhere after the first 6 days of birth, so even though NY does have a "Safe Haven Law" it doesnt apply to every baby past a certain age. They started this to help the ongoing problem with teens and moms having newborns and throwing them in the garbage. So the guy was arrested because you can not just say OK I give up and bring it into a hospital/church, there are agencies that can help you with things like this, such as the NYC foster care, Welfare, adoption agencies.

Just to clarify, who are "these people" you speak of?
