Avella takes $ from developers just like other politcos. Just look at his campaign filings. Isn't this a little after the fact? Where was he when the sanctuary was being torn apart?
"Where was he when the sanctuary was being torn apart?" -------------
He's been there all along newb! Tony Avella's been with Juniper Park all the way thru, know your facts please. He didn't have the power to stop it so far, but it's also not his district. Where Tony has the power to, he takes care of his preservationist and common sense constituents better than anyone in the CC. He's a voice for the communtiy & has a city wide influence sitting on the Zoning Cmte. ... but c'mon, look at what we're up against here and no one person's gonna likely change it. At least he's part of the soul-lution.
WHERE were the other local civics around St. Savior's besides the brave JP? Anybody hear from GAHS stepping in and making a contribution?
Avella is a good guy as are the folks at the JCPA. However, despite their good intentions, which I support, they havent been very effective in saving this church. Rallies are great. But theyve had two years to work on this. In those two years, they could have been out raising funds from the community. With a community the size of Maspeth and surrounding communities, they easily could have raised the million and put it aside for the church. Instead, the put their faith in a moron rapist like Pinky, who bullshitted them every step of the way and essentially waited till the last minute. Why they never pursued a lawsuit considering the explicit language in the original deed is puzzling. If it was a lack of funds, why didnt they just go out and raise the money?
"Why they never pursued a lawsuit considering the explicit language in the original deed is puzzling."
We did file a lawsuit in 2006 and it got us a temporary restrainhing order which held up demolition for months. As for raising money, we would have been a lot more effective in doing that if we hadn't had to spend the last 2 years fending ourselves against Gallagher and his cronies.
Avella is one of the biggest supporters of Charles Barron on the Council. Avella supported naming a street after Sonny Carson. That is disgraceful if you ask me. You can keep Avella.
Avella always proves to be ineffective at the end. He is great at calling press conferences, but accomplishes little if nothing in the end. Prime example is Tommy Huang's 223rd Street Project in Bayside. He always takes an opportunity to get his picture in the paper. He has disappointed us.
The Church is for all purposes practically gone now. I think the community should get behind improving the land and giving Maspeth what it needs. Maybe it should be an industrial park? The St Saviour's Industrial Park. With all the industrial space in the area being converted into residential developments, western Queens is running out of industrial space.
It allready is zoned for LIGHT Manufacturing, M1-1. Which means small businesses... contractors, distributors, computer companies, etc. Jobs....Look around people. Maspeth is an industrial area. The houses around the church are all in a Manufacturing zone, which makes those houses non conforming to code regulations. They are grandfatherd in, but the area is what it is...Light manufacturing. No ground thumping machinery alowed.

Why your neighborhood is full of Queens Crap
"The difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." - George Washington Plunkitt

once again Avella is sticking up for a community and staring down developers. The guy is okay - and for real. If he runs, he's got my vote.

Avella is connected to the Stavisky's and The Parkside Group. For that alone, he'll NEVER get my vote.

Wait to you see his replacement.

Zone it manufacturing, and put a big ugly ground thumping machine in there. Let it leak oil and emit noxious fumes and blot the sun with smoke.
Yes, make it a monument to the brute power of the machine to crush the people to whom it should serve.
Then we can take school kids to church and teach them right from wrong.

No, actually, it is zoned M1-1D and both houses and light manufacturing are conforming.
No ground thumping machinery alowed.

The ugly industrial monster I proposed for the site was in jest. It was meant as a metaphore for the machine, dimwit.
Never mind asking what Avella did.
He did plenty to help the cause.
Better to ask Gallagher what he didn't do.
But Pinky, for an appetizer , sold out St. Saviour's,
ate Maspeth for dinner,
then raped a senior citizen for dessert!
