I don't think anything could prevent the corner guy in the long run. As for the overhang, I think some additional air rights were sold from the corner landlord. How ridiculous looking!
Is that even legal? Isn't that building on that other buidings air rights? I've lived here my entire life and I'm still shocked by something every day.

Um... hello presevation community, maybe you need to start to sit down with some of the renowned architectural firms in the city for a little chat.
The rot with preservationists goes beyond elitism and sending polite letters about LPC commissioners.
It is a movement in serious trouble.
It needs some new leadership of the caliber of the 60s and 70s.
The AIA supports such ugly monstrosities, but it wouldn't dare print such buildings in its exalted AIA Guide to NYC. Hypocrites.
