Why are balconies allowed? They are the ugliest, useless features of all new homes. These homes are strikingly bad.
Fresh Meadows was and some parts still are a great neighborhood. I fear what has happened to western queens is quickly creeping eastward and will engulf what is left of the great 'hoods' of bayside, little neck, douglaston etc..

Unfortunately it is definitely heading east, although reinforcement of zoning limits have somewhat helped. At first you'd always think it was happening only on some other blocks, and there were a number of macMansion attempts that did squeak through.
My parents live in a nice, quiet, tree filled part of Bayside and have a neighbor who recently completed a home expansion. Two story extension, reducing their yard, cutting down all their trees. They also added a balcony - in a solid year and a half, they have never, ever been spotted out on the balcony. It blocks sunlight and sky from their neighbors on either side, and unfortunately, the construction was all done as cheaply as possible, so they have completely horrible wavy siding on the house now.

You guys still want to leave western Queens out of the loop, what they learn by abusing us (while you look the other way) they will visit upon you soon.
Of course balconies serve a purpose. You can hang your wash over the railings and store your junk on them. It's like an outdoor closet.
Balconies are useful... I don't let guests smoke in my apartment, so they smoke on the balcony.
I also prefer hanging my clothes in the sun on the balcony instead of using the dryer. There's nothing wrong with hanging your laundry.
well there is when it's in front of your house and the whole neighborhood has to look at your wash.

I can name a long list of crap happening in my neck of the Bayside. What's with these new comers moving in and turning they're lawn over so that dirt is exposed. Then weeds replace the grass that was once there and they turn the weeds over to expose the dirt again. Then they uproot what was once beautiful shrubs or cut them to the root. Is this some superstitious belief? You know crap moves in when previous owners of a house had a meticulous lawn and new owners neglect overgrown grass and are too cheap to buy a mower so they use a weed wacker and leave clippings all over the sidewalk once the are done. How about all those ugly stainless steel railings and storm doors and ugly looking bricks used on new construction in the area. One house even has commercial store front doors for a foyer. Then you have a house that was recently sold and now 15 taxi and livery cars parked in front and to the side along with a tow truck. Yup western Queens is creeping into eastern Queens like the plague but I still wouldn't trade it for any other section of the outer boros which have become overpriced slums.
