Coming soon to Astoria: yet more crap!

It's great that someone else did the work for me today. From the Angry NYer:

"This house is specifically being marketed to become another loaf of ‘Queens Crap’. I can already smell the broken DOB permits, illegal construction and foundation damage to neighboring buildings that will occur when this quaint little house is bulldozed and converted into a steaming pile of Fedders shit."

Crap and Future Crap, Broadway Special.

I guess there's no alternative but that this become a "development site". Not a great starter home, but strictly someplace to destroy and turn into a human warehouse.

What? You mean this little piece of quirky non-conformity has slipped through this far? Quick, tear it down!

This homeowner is obviously going to want to get out and I don't blame him/her. How did the place next door get built? The re-zoning is slow in certain parts or not at all. The homeowner certainly does not want to live next to the teeming masses throwing garbage on his property or the noise and crime it will generate. The towering neighboring structures are not what this block once offerred when this structure was built.

Yea, I know the guy that lives in the house, oh he complained about the crap built around him, bragged about his cute little back yard with a well and artwork.

We know the routine in Astoria, " I love my house, but ... " bullcrap bullcrap bullcrap.

What a bunch of losers in that community. No pride. No respect for themselves or their neighbors.

Gee, its funny, when I read astorians.com they always talk about how all the yuppies are moving in.

Sure. Yuppies from Tijuanna.

CB1 the community board from hell.

Starter homes are verboten in NYC.

Minorities (lower income folk) might be able
to afford them and make a good life here.

That would flush NYC's carefully woven plot
of ethnic/racial cleansing right down the drain.

If you don't have the wealth to buy top of the line
Mayor Disney doesn't want you here.

Perhaps, in his eyes,
you're not clean or white enough
to rub elbows with him or fit into
his envisioned "N.Y. 2030" !

When I pass this house on Broadway, I would admire it. Its so cute, so full of character. It speaks of a real community with real people with real pride.

Astoria used to be like that.

No folks, this is not 'progress.' This is a community that no longer respects itself. Places like this would be protected if they would be in Mahattan, or at least a stink would be raised in another community.

Not here.

Like the homes getting destroyed in Old Astoria, its yet another mark of a community at the brink of steep decline.

Astoria used to be a community of owner occupied homes. This is what protected it in the 70s.

Now it kis full of absentee landlords who live elsewhere. They look at it as a cow to be milked.

Pure and simple.

You got that right.

Who wants to live in a community with overwhelmed schools, power grid, trains, streets, and grafitti. Closed firehouses and hospitals. Mounds of garbage everytime there is a three day weekend and rats running around the sidewalks. Power plants! Ah those power plants that generate a good portion of the city's pollution.

Look what is happening in my community Dutch Kills - the next community from you but with that same wonderful community board we have all come to respect and admire for their dedication - for the developers.

They are building 15 story monster hotels for Section 8 tenants right next to our houses. They are blocking our back yards and windows. Does anyone want to help?

No, they tell us to rush through the new zoning and don't talk to anyone to slow it down.

Our local civic stinks. They tell us this will 'help' us. They are full of it! They are the ones that brought development into our community in the first place! Nice job, boys!

It will not stop a development, bring back a back yard, or open up a blocked window.

But it will 'help'.

Forget it. Western Queens is written off. All this will do will protect the developers' investments from a community of Section 8 hotels.

Astoria is next.

What is wrong with you guys? Why do you just roll over a play dead?

You need to down zone like the rest of Queens (and the city for that matter). Or at least fight this like they are doing in Jamaica.

Thanks Crap!

If I read the Gazette, all I hear is how this is great for Astoria.

You open our eyes.

It is a small dumpy house. A nice two-story brick one-family built in its place would be an improvement. Why should we keep cheap-looking houses just because they are old? Who are you to tell this owner that he should take substantially less money when he sells because you don't want a different house built on this spot?

You think this is going to be replaced by a 2-story, 1-family brick house? HA HA HA HA HA!!!!

No, he is a typical developer bullshitting a gullable Astorian who wants to be bullshitted (it eases the sellout guilt)

It does encapsulate the backward thinking in that community, though. Lets take a look:

"It is a small dumpy house. A nice two-story brick one-family built in its place would be an improvement."

Now go to this page:

All those old dumpy houses. Just waiting to be 'improved.'

Don't forget the Latin American gang grafitti all over Astoria that no one "sees."

----------

Hey nitwit. Why doesn't he open a fat rendering plant there. He could even make more money than a residential house.

Jail? Foundry? Toxic dump?

Hell the options are endless when you are a developer in Astoria.

I think a ten story 20x60 would look even better. Penthouse apartment anyone?

When it comes to a "steaming pile of Fedders shit", I suppose the sky's the limit.

Agree - But if the Pols have put up so many roadblocks to create the inability to rezone at all, it allowed the developers to buy up every foot of scarce property left to put up empty crap. We the people are shouting and screaming to get this done all the while homeowners such as the featured one in this post is trapped by crap and sanely trying to get out while he has value now - I'd do the same before going insane living there.

Down zoning is, apparently, reserved
for the more leafy green environs....
like northeast Queens !

College Point (and Astoria?)
are often considered the armpits
or assholes of our borough
by city planning.
