Avella and the protesters understand the need for the towers to improve service in the area, but want more community involvement in deciding where to place them.
“We’re just so frustrated, because we’re so restricted by federal regulations (on what they can do to affect the tower placement),” he said, “I don’t know of anything else you can build in this city without conforming to zoning restrictions.”
It is against federal law for the city to attempt to regulate the cell companies through zoning regulations.

Mr Avella is a model example of a Pol who energetically protects and leads his area as well as others. I hope he runs for Mayor.

I don't think the Queens-based owners of horse carriage businesses will agree with you about Avella.
From MSN's lead story today:
"In September, an audit by the city's comptroller found that the horses work in an area without enough water spigots, shade or drains for their waste — and without enough oversight by authorities."
Looks like the Queens-based owners of horse carriage businesses not liking Avella is good news for him.
I hope Avella runs for mayor too.
That end of Whitestone is prime real estate. There is only one block of small stores there.
They have commercial property though down by where the old Grace Construction yard used to be. I haven't been down that way in years - I assume it's still a heavy commercial area - why not build there if they HAVE to have a tower in Whitestone. Otherwise, I vote that they erect the tower in Forest Hills.
Avella is a TYPICAL pol ... he's so self-serving. NY (and the rest of the country) is catching on to the fact that we need BUSINESSPEOPLE to run things ... Not career politicians. His policy is to rail against everything - particularly development of any kind. That's NOT the person we need in City Hall. And if some Whitestonians left their block, they would realize that.
Avella and Padavan -- I didn't know there was a "Dumb and Dumber" sequel.
I admire them both. If you want Dumb and Dumber try Gallagher and Maltese.
don't follow politics much, myself, but from what I can tell Avella seems like a good mayoral candidate. He's been taking a firm stand against developers who flout the law and disregard ethics.
