Only because it's not in her backyard

Here's some ultra-liberal crack-smoking tweeder talk from Vickie's paper:

Instead of waiting on the corner for work, these jornaleros must have a place where they can take refuge from the cold and find the tools for integration into society. They should have a job center, which should include English classes, assistance with citizenship applications and career advice.

Job center a must

We believe that the elected officials who represent this area must come up with the dollars - not just seed money, but full funding - to form a public/private partnership to make this Queens job center a reality.

Queens is the most ethnically diverse county in the country and has paved the way on a number of groundbreaking issues.

Let us continue to set the example by raising the funds necessary to create a job center for the “Ghost Workers” of 69th Street and Roosevelt Avenue.

Let's get this straight. Our tax dollars don't go far enough providing medical care and other services for illegals. Now we should also provide aid and comfort to them while their lawbreaking selves go about looking for illegal work. Instead of curbing illegal immigration and overpopulation, we should embrace it and encourage it.

Okay. The men in the white coats need to make a visit to Bell Boulevard, pronto. Notice the adoption of a term in their language to describe them - "jornaleros". How about "illegales"?

The county gov't here in the Bay Area set up one of these and though I am NOT happy about the tax dollars used, it *did* cut down on the street harassment and trash somewhat. It's still the wrong "solution" to the problem, but it helped improve the daily situation.

"illegales" Feds, state Police & local police should arrest and deport these folks period. They are here illegally - throw these folks out a logical plain and simple solution.

Crappy mentioned this weeks ago. YOUR tax dollars will not be used to remove them, but to encourage them with a hiring hall.

Remember, you as a voter are made meaningless because your choices are scripted. You as a taxpayer are made meaningless because you have no real control over taxes and spending.

Ah but the tweeded!! Their needs are filled by the ‘boys.’ Their votes are hoped for (someday) the ol’ Tammany. From their ranks are developed the soldiers for tomorrow’s NY, a stratified society supported by low wage employees, low expectation tenants, and cannon fodder for the construction industry.

They are the bayonets supporting the clubhouse. The Boss would be proud!

Go to Astoria - just a few blocks from the Gazette, and where they breathlessly write peons to Bricklayer Onorato, instead of writing about the Pissing Peons of Broadway (hmmm, sounds like a title to a play)

Ah, the Know-Nothing Party of Queens has a new online organ--The Queens Crap. Aptly named.

Anonymous said...

Actually, the Know Nothing Party was against legal immigrants from whom the majority here are descended. We are protesting the presence of illegal immigrants. Maybe you enjoy supporting people who don't pay taxes, but I don't. Do you realize that illegals can get workers comp? That's pretty insane.

I agree we should take pity on the illegals and house them -- in a federal deportation cell. Round them up and ship them out. They'll get tired of travelling back and forth. Funny how they can arrest a teenager who does not have proper ID, but the police can't arrest the illegals who don't have ID. Amazing. The cops should slap the cuffs on the trucks who pick these people up for cheap labor. Fine the employers and see how fast the illegals go home. No work, no money. Simple equation, but no one understands it.

This is from Newday's CONSERVATIVE columnst Ray Keating:
""Locally, it's time for some groups to stop kicking around immigrants, and instead start recognizing the role they play in keeping Long Island's economy afloat. Common-sense economics and basic human decency dictate welcoming immigrants and aiding their assimilation.

Meanwhile, our congressional representatives should be pushing for comprehensive immigration reform. Yes, tighten up the borders for national security purposes, but also expand legal avenues for immigration to keep our economy chugging along. It's clear that immigrants are not an economic burden, but instead a blessing."

"So the importance of Latinos to the local economy has expanded. Torras and Skinner found that employment among Latinos on Long Island grew by one-third from 2000 to 2004. And between 1997 and 2002 the number of Latino-owned businesses on Long Island jumped by 35 percent, with growth in Suffolk County particularly strong at 51 percent. To sum up, the authors estimated that the Latino population in Nassau and Suffolk had a total economic impact of $5.7 billion in 2004, including helping to create more than 52,000 jobs. The economic pie grew.

But what about the burdens immigrants place on local government services? Torras and Skinner estimated that Latinos directly or indirectly generated $925 million in revenue for local governments in 2004, while costing Long Island localities $723 million. That comes out to a net positive contribution to local government of $614 per Latino resident."

The solution is simple- tell the local businesses to stop advertising in Vickie's paper. An economic boycott will set her straight.

What if I were to stand on a street corner all day begging for a job? Would the contractors pick me up? Probably not, since I don't look Spanish.

First of all, we aren't talking about Latinos as the sole illegal population. Second of all, the passage you reprinted mentions "Latinos", not illegal immigrants. Legal immigrants of all colors pay taxes and use far fewer services for free.

An illegal immigrant can get a taxpayer subsidized education at CUNY. Why should my tax dollars help deny an American kid a degree but pay for a kid who doesn't belong here to get one?

Vicky says:
"We understand that some people believe that these day laborers, many of whom are undocumented, do not deserve the same protections and rights as American citizens. However, these workers are a vital part of the city’s economy and need help."

Should the illegals vote? Should they be allowed to run for public office? And then demand higher taxes from citizens? Should they be allowed to possess or purchase weapons? These are rights American citizens possess.

If they are such a "vital" part of the economy, how many has Vickie hired?

If Vickie believes they need "help", I ask, how much help has she provided? Has Vickie set aside room for these people in her offices during crummy weather?

No. I'll bet Vickie wants the city and state government to confiscate more of your hard-earned money to provide a never-ending list of services needed by illegals but denied to you because you earn too much money! It's funny about these officials and the laws they choose to enforce!

I think people have to understand that we welcome LEGAL immigrants --people who wait their turn in line and meet all the criteria to LEGALLY be here. Most people have no problem with them and embrace them. However, UNDOCUMENTED means ILLEGAL. Undocumented is a buzz word. Illegal is wrong, but undocumented could mean they don't have appropriate papers, which is because they are here ILLEGALLY. I'm so tired of paying taxes on everything, while these people get a free ride. I had to pay for my children's college education. At CUNY and SUNY, they cry poverty and get it for free. When are American Citizens going to get a freebie?

CUNY Will Raise Tuition for Illegal Immigrants Who Had Paid In-State Rates
Monday, November 5, 2001
By ROBIN WILSON
The City University of New York will raise tuition next semester for students who are illegal immigrants, ending a 12-year-old policy of allowing foreigners who have attended New York State high schools to pay lower in-state tuition.

The university announced the change Friday, saying it was the result of a review of the institution's policies and procedures prompted by the terrorist attacks of September 11 and undertaken by Frederick P. Schaffer, the university's lawyer.

According to estimates by the university, at least 2,788 of the 200,000 students on the university's 20 campuses are living in the country illegally. Many immigrated to the United States with their parents years ago and have attended high school in New York.

Until now, such students have been allowed to pay in-state tuition rates at CUNY as long as they could prove that they had attended high school in New York for at least a year before enrolling in college. (A 1982 U.S. Supreme Court ruling allows children who are in the country illegally to attend public elementary and secondary schools.)

As of January, illegal immigrants enrolling at CUNY will pay out-of-state tuition rates. Those attending two-year colleges will see tuition rise from $1,250 to $1,538 per semester. For those attending the system's four-year colleges, tuition will rise from $1,600 to $3,400 per semester.

"Some students may drop from full time to part time," said a CUNY official who did not want to be named. "Some students may not be able to go, and some students will find other ways to cope."

Foreign students do not qualify for New York State or federal financial-aid programs.

Until recently, CUNY had been the only New York institution and possibly the only college or university in the country to count illegal immigrants as state residents. Lawmakers in other states, including California and Texas, have been moving in the opposite direction of CUNY's most recent plan, approving legislation this year that would allow foreigners to pay in-state tuition rates.

As part of his review at CUNY, Mr. Schaffer reconsidered a law approved by Congress in 1996 that, he determined, outlawed the extension of in-state tuition benefits to illegal immigrants. At the time the law was passed, CUNY officials decided not to change their policy of counting illegal immigrants as state residents, because the U.S. government had not yet put out regulations for carrying out the law.

But Mr. Schaffer has said that even though the government has not issued regulations, a conference report published by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate makes clear that lawmakers did not intend for illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates.

CUNY officials said they were not taking the change lightly. They consulted immigration lawyers to see if there was a chance that, despite the 1996 federal law, they could continue extending in-state tuition rates to foreigners. But, they said, all the experts told them no.

"CUNY's Office of Legal Affairs indicated that the university must be in full compliance with federal law, and thus, the tuition rates have to be equalized," said Jay Hershenson, CUNY's vice chancellor for university relations.

When I say "tax subsidized", I am not talking about financial aid or in-state rates. CUNY tuition is affordable before these programs because the attendance of every student is subsidized by taxpayers.

"CUNY and SUNY are separate and independent university systems, although both are public institutions which receive funding from New York State. CUNY, however, is additionally funded by the City of New York."

Thank you and good night.

Wow, 2788 American kids were passed over so illegals could attend CUNY on my dime? Why is this?

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.
Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've
done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest
(except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:

You are Required to let me stay in your house
You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
You are Required to Educate my kids
You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family

(my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your
house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well,
you know, I did break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!!!

I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can communicate with me. And don't forget to make sure your forms are in MY language - I need to understand them...

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America.

Not so fast.
Are you saying that they do not pay sales tax which is actually the most regressive tax?
I'll refer you back to the Torras and Skinner report which covered legal and illegal immigrants.

Why is a head of lettuce $1.99? Illegal migrant workers.
Why is produce not more expensive? Illegal migrant workers.
Who fills the menial labor jobs that american citizens feel they are too good to work?
Maybe if parents got back to making their little precious snowflakes work and learn the value of work, Pedro from Guatemala wouldn't be mowing lawns or washing dishes.

"Are you saying that they do not pay sales tax which is actually the most regressive tax?"

There must be a reading comprehension problem because the commenter was talking about CUNY, not sales tax.

"Maybe if parents got back to making their little precious snowflakes work and learn the value of work, Pedro from Guatemala wouldn't be mowing lawns or washing dishes."

The legal residents of this country expect to be paid minimum wage, which congress sees fit to increase every other year. They can't compete with illegals, who work off the books. Are you advocating for American companies and American employees to hide their income sources and shirk their tax burdens?

No reading comprehension problem, just pointing out that the TAX dollars that go to fund CUNY come from SALES TAX. Which no matter how crafty they are, illegals can not avoid.

"The legal residents of this country expect to be paid minimum wage, which congress sees fit to increase every other year."
Which conservative republicans oppose.

"They can't compete with illegals, who work off the books. Are you advocating for American companies and American employees to hide their income sources and shirk their tax burdens?"

Who said anything like that? You are creating a straw man here. The POINT is that illegal migrant workers keep the prices you pay for things down.
Here is a simple question - Are you willing to pay $5.00 or more for a head of lettuce?
$10.00 a pound for oranges or grapes?
Will you pay more money for goods and services that illegal migrant workers do?
The funny thing is the biggest opponents of the illegal crack-downs are southwest farmers and ranchers who are very conservative. Why? Because your little snowflake won't pick lettuce in 100 degree heat for minimum wage.

"the TAX dollars that go to fund CUNY come from SALES TAX."

Actually, I believe more is raised from income tax.

As for my snowflake, I don't have one. Would I spend more for a head of lettuce? Sure, if it means greater security.
