The former Family Court House on Parsons Blvd. is currently undergoing demolition and Jamaica's architectural marvel has been tossed to the side to make room for more plain and boring glass and steel. It is very apparent that the grandiose Jamaica Plan is intended to move Jamaica into the future by eliminating all vestiges of classical Queens history. With big money interests and the little momentum that CB 12 has shown for putting up a fight and preserving its community, its no wonder that this is occurring. Remember Penn Station. Where are the preservationists?

Better not throw any stones.
You know how it goes....about people in glass houses....
or was it court houses....I forget!
Great for growing Orchids in !
i'm sorry, but that's no penn station.
The preservationists are too busy with the East Village ot pay attentino to Queens!
Actually the City is requiring the developer to save the facade of the old courthouse, or at least thats what they said in all of the public hearings for this project.
A half a loaf, I guess, is better than none: they're keeping the historic facade and building behind it.
Are they still keeping the exterior and incorporating it into the new structure?
This is just wrong. I am so fed up right now.
Maybe the preservationists in the village have a friend who would be interested in taking on Queens.
We need to do something!
Just imagine- only a successful lawyer would be able to afford living in this new development. No irony lost here.
What a disaster! How about refurbishing and restoring?
I don't believe in this mayor of ours any longer, and my bet is that the facade won't even be spared. I could write a book..."A Tragedy Grows in Queens."
"A half a loaf, I guess, is better than none: they're keeping the historic facade and building behind it."
Instead the facade will stick out of a glass box. They might as well just destroy the entire thing.
Did someone say loaf? I love Grimaldi's bread!
Did someone say loaf? That's what I do all day!
looks like the developers are going to pinch another loaf.
Pinch a loaf ?
Hell......they're going to slice it up
and make a bunch of crap and jelly sandwiches !
This is horrendous. A big old disappointment, to be honest, considering that Jersey City made the decision, thanks in large part to a local preservationist effort, to save their historic courthouse. To see a beautiful older building like this go so unceremoniously is a terrible thing to see - in New York City, of all places...
Am I the only old timer that remembers that this was a Carnegie Library before it was a courthouse? It had murals of New Amsterdam, marble floors, marvelous woodwork, etc. I enrered the courthouse out of curiosity once to see what was left. Zilch! It was gutted. A flourescent nightmare, much as the Queensborough library which now houses the collection is.
