We walk more than drive, we eat healthier food, and there's another reason that NYers are healthier than the rest of the USA:
It’s also because New York is old and filled with attractive architecture and interesting street scenes — since, as it turns out, aesthetically pretty places lure people out of their homes and cars. A 2002 study by the National Institutes of Health found that people living in buildings built before 1973 were significantly more likely to walk one-mile distances than those living in areas with newer architecture — because their environments were less architecturally ugly.
Why New Yorkers Last Longer
Hmmm...since we have to gaze upon all of our Queens Crap on a daily basis, do we bring down the life expectancy of the city?

If I'm not mistaken the photo is of 31 Street & 8th Avenue, right by Penn Station. I used to work around the corner from the spot. People did rush about there, but then too there were lots of strung out prostitutes and homeless winos who just stood about in the same place all day long. Quite a contrast.
What BS!
