Residents protest rape of St. Saviour's

An emergency press conference was held at the site of the former St. Saviour's Church in Maspeth yesterday to denounce the cutting of more than 170 trees present on the sacred site.
The Juniper Park Civic Association has been lobbying to have the parcel of land turned into a park and community center for more than a year and a half.
The devastation was hard to stomach.
Councilman Tony Avella joined the crowd to express outrage over what the developer did out of spite. He vowed as chair of the city council's zoning committee to reject the developer's application for a zoning change from manufacturing to residential in order to build 70+ housing units on the property.
Neighbors who attended expressed understandable shock, sadness and anger at Councilman Gallagher's role in the cutting and Mayor Bloomberg's refusal to save the trees while he continues to boast about how he plans to "green" the city.
The anger turned into hope and positive energy as speaker after speaker vowed to continue to keep fighting to save this open space and convert it into a park for the community.
At the conclusion of the press conference, attendees gathered at the site of a fallen tree trunk that was placed in the street to reserve parking for the arboreal crew. This was believed to be the oldest tree on the site.
After the crowd dispersed, members of the JPCA took a cross-cut of the trunk so that the rings could be counted.
Shortly after they left the scene, they were called back by residents frantic over the reappearance of a tree cutting service.
The cutters were on the eastern end of the property cutting down the trees there, allowing limbs to rain down onto the sidewalk and damaging cars parked in the street.
The truck containing the cherry picker was obstructing traffic flow.
Nests of birds and squirrels were clearly visible in the trees that were targeted.
Residents stood under the cherry picker, forcing the operator to lower it to the ground.

A confrontation took place.
The police were called to the scene and issued a slew of summonses to the company and forced them to vacate.
It was noted that the truck had its DOT # scratched off of it.
The sanitation department also responded and issued a $300 ticket to the property owner for the tree trunks on the sidewalk & street.
The workers left, taking 160 years of Maspeth's natural history with them.
The arson watch is now on. Where is Dennis Gallagher? In hiding. Where is Mayor Bloomberg? Catering to the needs of communities he actually cares about while he turns his back on the salt of the earth.

Where's the Borough President? Late again?

I drove in from north Flushing to attend yesterday's rally and am glad that I made the effort. This is an issue that strongly resonates with me. I walked around the block and was saddened to see so much destruction of nature right before the community's eyes, as well as my own.

It was also reassuring to see that City Councilman Tony Avella was present and speaking to the media and the gathered crowd. I was surprised and concerned that he was the ONLY public official present. I also learned that the Parkside Group, a political PR firm with past and present city officials on the payroll, is representing the developer. Can you say Conflict of Interest!!!!!

This whole ideal is absurd, especially when Mayor Doomberg's 2030 plan calls for a 10 minute walk to a nearby park for residents of New York City. This Maspeth neighborhood is the only grayed out area on his map. So why doesn't our "green' mayor give in to the community's request and hand the property over to the Parks Department for the neighborhood's use? It is, in my opinion, a crime to destroy such a historical treasure to put up housing that will negatively impact the community.

I don't think that rape is a strong enough word to describe this situation. Apparently, I left too soon. The developer has some nerve. This was a Saturday afternoon gathering and the workers arrived later on Saturday without a permit. What does that tell you?

It is about time that every community member all over New York City open their eyes to what is going on around them and speak out before it is too late. We must also reach out to each other and organize a plan of resistance. I don't want to hear the complainers on this blogs years from now griping about what they could have, should have, and would have done. Attend rallies, write letters, make phone calls. JUST DO IT!!!!

I just wanted to add that there was one TV crew on hand yesterday...WABC-TV Eyewitless news. They actually left when someone, I think it was Bob Holden(?), was addressing the crowd. The news van was apparently lost and passed by about 10 minutes later. What a joke!

The story was not on the evening or nightly local newscast but did get about one or two minutes this morning on the early morning news. I recorded the later newscast (9 am to 10 am) and it was not on again. I think this story deserves a lot more media scrutiny.

Would it behoove the people reading this blog to call up TV and radio stations? How about letters to the editor of local, city-wide, and even national press outlets? Don't just sit there. DO SOMETHING!

As a resident of Queens, all I can say is what a shame to let history go down the drain.

As far as our elected officals, they are selling us out from the Mayor to the Borough President to that soon to be criminal Pinky.

Continue with your fight, the people always win.....history says so and that is what this country is all about.

I hope your local official.....I mean criminal, is gone sooner than we can hope for. He's the main problem and it appears that he does not have the best interest of the community under his watch.

How he can bless the destruction of this sight is indeed rape in another sense, your community.

Is Gallagher a rapist?

Was this assault on the trees a gang rape?

If so, who were committing the rape?

(1) Bloomberg - He held the church grounds down;
(2) Tierney of the LPC - he watched out for the preservationists;
(3) Katz (yes this Geisha Girl participated) - she turned the lights off on the land use committee;
(4) Community Board 5 members - the ones whip pretended that the rape wasn't occurring (remember “Kitty” Genovese, of Kew Gardens, in 1964)
(5) DOB - who gave permission to the developers to rape the property;
(6) The bank that financed the rape;
(7) Bloomberg's appointees who betrayed their positions by lying to the community while assisting the developer in the rape.

And all the politicians and reporters and publishers who are about to now rape the woman a second time by printing every lie possible to destroy her reputation.

It was great that there were so many people that came out on such short notice. There were about 40+ neighbors who came out because we knocked on doors the night before and gave out fliers at the supermarket. Tony Avella's wife, Judy, accompanied him and people from College Point, Ozone Park and Flushing also attended. Christabel Gough from Manhattan, an HDC advisor, came. Paul Graziano, president of HDC sent a statement which I read. He couldn't be there in person because he was out of town. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us!

Hey.....anonymous "out of control" .....

Your negativism is like a refreshing pat on the back a reminder.....an inspiration.... to have heart and keep our spirits up and our powder dry! You're not talking to weaklings who are frightened of the sounds of cannon fire or run at the sight of a little blood ! This was never expected to be a storybook easy battle !

This area was in the midst of the American Revolution.....there are no defeatists here (perhaps like yourself) only tireless determined lovers of their neighborhood !

It may be the end of the 8th inning....... bases may be loaded and the odds appear to be against us.....but as Yogi Berra once said.......

"IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER" !

If every tree is cut to the ground and the stumps ground into dust.....this community will never surrender the field !

Trees can be replanted and our children will be there to watch them grow as once did others over 100 years ago !

This is not merely a struggle to save the past..... this is a fight for the future of a community !

I am sickened by the crap that is allowed to go on in this borough of Queens.
No developer of public official seems to give a rat's ass about history, preservation, decency or respect for the people who live here.

Let's make sure that we vote 'em all out when they're up for reelection.

It breaks my heart to see this. It's pretty clear that Bloomberg views the developers as his peers, and could not care less about the regular Joes in Queens. I really wanted to think better of him. This and that insulting
"congestion pricing" nightmare proves he is nothing but another elitist with utter disrespect for the rights and needs of middle class New Yorkers. And now he expects to buy the presidency? Hah.

Anonymous said...

Couldn't we have bought this property from the owner before this happened? This was still private property that could have been purchased and preserved -- where were the Trust for Public Land, Parks Department, National Parks? -- before the trees were taken down. Since the owners are just after profit, we could've done something if we put our resources together.

Can I ask a question?

Who in their right minds would want cheap crowded housing to overburden even more, the vast amount of services we use today versus maintaining history, a piece of the environment and whatever nature we still have left in West Maspeth?

Your insensitivity to this issue only serves as an inspiration to me and others to fight the fight!

I hope it becomes a citywide issue that will illustrate the corruption of the Dumberg Administration.

These robber barons have crossed the line too many times lately and their time has come to face the music.

Guys, you need to get a hobby. Nobody cares about a giant vacant lot.

The city needs housing, and Maspeth is NOT overcrowded. In fact, it is the least dense
neighborhood in Western Queens. Why do you hate new housing so much, and love vacant lots? Very odd.

And what’s with the “New Parks” claim?!? There are tons of parks in the neighborhoods. Heck, the local NIMBY organization is NAMED after a giant park. The city already wasted millions building a giant park on the Gas Tanks site; a park that nobody uses! Of course
nobody cares about that new park, they just wanted to stop development.

Also, what’s with this clown Avella? Apparently he’s unaware that Maspeth isn’t in his district. Maybe he should take care of the illegal dealings on his
property before casting stones! Is someone paying him off? Why would he care about a vacant lot miles from his district? When’s Avella going off to jail? This board doesn’t like Gallagher, but Avella is a thousand times worse.

Get a hobby and move on with life. I don't know why anyone would try and preserve a vacant lot, but I
guess to each his own!!

If you really think the abandoned, falling-down church is so wonderful, then maybe it can be incorporated in the new housing development, or moved onto another
site. I support the housing, as do most of my Maspeth neighbors. Avella and the other criminals should go back to their neighborhoods.

Anonymous said...

"Nobody cares about a giant vacant lot."

Apparently the people who showed up - at least 40 (on short notice) do.

"Why do you hate new housing so much, and love vacant lots?"

This is open space which is sorely lacking in the area.

"And what’s with the “New Parks” claim?!? There are tons of parks in the neighborhoods."

There are no parks in West Maspeth.

"The city already wasted millions building a giant park on the Gas Tanks site; a park that nobody uses!"

Really? Wow! And here I thought when I passed by yesterday that construction on that park hadn't yet begun. Apparently a weedy lot chained off from use is now considered to be a park open to the public.

"Also, what’s with this clown Avella? Apparently he’s unaware that Maspeth isn’t in his district."

What's with Pinky? Apparently he's unaware that Maspeth is in his district. Check that - he's aware and doesn't care.

"If you really think the abandoned, falling-down church is so wonderful, then maybe it can be incorporated in the new housing development, or moved onto another
site."

The church is not falling down. on the contrary, the Koreans who owned it were doing renovations on it up until they sold it. Structurally, it's very sturdy. The developer made it look like hell.

"I support the housing, as do most of my Maspeth neighbors."

Now that's just funny. All my neighbors are complaining that there is too much development. People want this church saved.

Looks like we aren't the ones who need to get a life.

Crawford: Avella is there because none of Maspeth's local politicians want to get involved or they agree with Dennis Gallagher that housing belongs on this site. Christine Quinn has been alerted about the developments here and her reaction is known only to her, since she has responded with silence.

St. Saviour's is "falling down" because it was partially demolished by the developer before he was prevented from doing more to it.

The church was built by Richard Upjohn, who also created Trinity Church and the Green-Wood cemetery main gate. That alone makes it landmark worthy.

And even if most of Maspeth wants housing there (I doubt it) it doesn't matter. The majority of Americans likely had problems with the Civil Rights Act, and the majority of baseball execs wanted no part of Jackie Robinson.

Sometimes, what's right has nothing to do with what the majority favors.

"Guys, you need to get a hobby. Nobody cares about a giant vacant lot."

It is not a giant vacant lot. It is hallowed ground! Nobody cares? So far over one thousand people have signed an online petition to save this important piece of history.

"Also, what’s with this clown Avella? Apparently he’s unaware that Maspeth isn’t in his district. Maybe he should take care of the illegal dealings on his
property before casting stones! Is someone paying him off? Why would he care about a vacant lot miles from his district? When’s Avella going off to jail? This board doesn’t like Gallagher, but Avella is a thousand times worse."

Crawford, you are so off the mark that you remind me of all that is wrong with our political system. It gives the right to morons like you to exercise the power to vote! Perhaps it is you who sports a big red nose, clownie! No amount of insults will make your case on this issue.

I am not Councilman Avella's biggest fan but I believe he is doing his best to represent all New York City citizens, even if they are not in his council district. Councilman Avella wrote letters on my behalf for a health issue even though John Liu is allegedly my council representative. Do you want to know why he did this for me? It is because he cares! This is more than I can say about most of our elected officials.

Also, Councilman Avella is the head of the zoning committee and this property, as far as I know, has yet to be zoned for residential use. Therefore, it is perfectly within his duties as a councilman to get involved and work with the citizens of the Maspeth community.

Why are you slandering Avella and making false accusations? The issue of his pool has been amicably resolved with the DOB so what illegal dealings are you referring to? How the heck is he a thousand times worse than Pinky Gallagher? Why should Avella be in jail? Please explain yourself...if you can!

“Some asshole suggested that Maspeth residents should have bought St. Saviour's (then and now) since it's up for sale....”

“Why don't you just dip into a couple of your jumbo CDs and buy it for us you fool !!!”

A good friend of mind warned me not to bother posting anything to this blog, as any difference of opinion is greeted with personal attacks.

If you “fools” think that by personal attacks you are going to save this property, you have a lot to learn. All of you should welcome different ideas to save this property, instead of name calling.

What is this 3rd grade?? You all need to grow up.

I offered a solution that has worked elsewhere. I didn’t say for the residents of Maspeth to buy the property, I suggested that a NFP (501(c)(3))be formed to start a conservatory over the property, and have the NFP buy the property, and then you would have your park, museum, etc. The 501 would have allowed all donations to be tax deductable, a very big reason for people to contribute large sums of cash, highly appreciated stock, etc. You could educate people in the use of some advanced planning techniques and have them donate monies from their estates, giving them a big estate tax savings, and still giving the children(s) a very large inheritances after they are gone. There is a lot of "old" money in this area that can be freed up to more than just buy this property but to also maintain it for the generation that will come after us.

Remember a basic principle of the martial arts, when confronted with an opposing force, you never stop it, but simply redirect it in another direction.

To repeat myself, you should all welcome with open arms, different opinions that can help save this property, instead of attacking them.

As for my “jumbo CDs”, you can count on money going to other worthy causes, that don’t have the need for personal attacks on individuals who have a difference of opinion.

Good Luck – You’re going to need it.

2) the tree cutting service so hinky?

I love the way bloggers remain anonymous when they make accusatory statements. Thank you for encouraging me to reread the correspondences between Councilman Avella and various federal and city agencies on my behalf. They were quite specific and certainly anything but form letters! And he certainly did follow up on my concerns.

The health issue being brought up was and still is very complex. I know that one day someone in the right authority will heed my call. Unfortunately, I saw that Councilman Avella's office was getting stonewalled and further attempts by his office to pursue this issue would be a waste of his staff's time. I told them that I would try to find a different way to approach the problem. Note to self: The local media is a major waste of time if you want to find a good investigative reporter.

Councilman Avella and his staff went above and beyond my expectations, especially considering that I live in John Liu's council district. I also have learned that many other people in my council district reach out to Tony Avella for assistance on city-related matters. Perhaps the real reason that the Avella office sends out as much correspondence as you claim, it is because he and his staff are handling more of a workload than most other council offices.

I also saw Councilman Avella fight the mayor's office regarding a proposed use of the old Flushing Airport site. He led the community in 4 protest rallies and the mayor and EDC had to yield to his demand to drop the project! Ineffectual? I don't think so. I'm sure that there are other Queens Crap bloggers who can cite positive examples of Avella's efforts to fight for the little guys and gals who make up a majority of New York City's citizenry.

If Tony Avella runs for mayor, he'll certainly get my vote!

Want to see into the dark and violent mind of Gallagher? Take a look at the photos of the property on the St. Saviour's site.

He cannot get his way by persuasion? He will rape and destroy so violently in the hopes that no one else can use the property either.

He is a sociopath.

An extract from: http://www.hss.caltech.edu/~mcafee/Bin/sb.html says:

THE MALIGNANT PERSONALITY:

These people are mentally ill and extremely dangerous! The following precautions will help to protect you from the destructive acts of which they are capable.

First, to recognize them, keep the following guidelines in mind.

(1) They are habitual liars. They seem incapable of either knowing or telling the truth about anything.

(2) They are egotistical to the point of narcissism. They really believe they are set apart from the rest of humanity by some special grace.

(3) They scapegoat; they are incapable of either having the insight or willingness to accept responsibility for anything they do. Whatever the problem, it is always someone else's fault.

(4) They are remorselessly vindictive when thwarted or exposed.

(5) Genuine religious, moral, or other values play no part in their lives. They have no empathy for others and are capable of violence. Under older psychological terminology, they fall into the category of psychopath or sociopath, but unlike the typical psychopath, their behavior is masked by a superficial social facade.

If you have come into conflict with such a person or persons, do the following immediately!

(1) Notify your friends and relatives of what has happened.

Do not be vague. Name names, and specify dates and circumstances. Identify witnesses if possible and provide supporting documentation if any is available.

(2) Inform the police. The police will do nothing with this information except to keep it on file, since they are powerless to act until a crime has been committed. Unfortunately, that often is usually too late for the victim. Nevertheless, place the information in their hands.

Obviously, if you are assaulted or threatened before witnesses, you can get a restraining order, but those are palliative at best.

(3) Local law enforcement agencies are usually under pressure if wealthy or politically powerful individuals are involved, so include state and federal agencies as well and tell the locals that you have. In my own experience, one agency that can help in a pinch is the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service or (in Canada) Victims Services at your local police unit. It is not easy to think of the IRS as a potential friend, but a Swedish study showed that malignant types (the Swedes called them bullies) usually commit some felony or other by the age of twenty. If the family is wealthy, the fact may never come to light, but many felonies involve tax evasion, and in such cases, the IRS is interested indeed. If large amounts of money are involved, the IRS may solve all your problems for you. For obvious reasons the Drug Enforcement Agency may also be an appropriate agency to approach. The FBI is an important agency to contact, because although the FBI does not have jurisdiction over murder or assault, if informed, they do have an active interest in any other law enforcement agencies that do not follow through with an honest investigation and prosecution should a murder occur. Civil rights are involved at that point. No local crooked lawyer, judge, or corrupt police official wants to be within a country mile if that comes to light! It is in such cases that wealthy psychopaths discover just how firm the "friends" they count on to cover up for them really are! Even some of the drug cartel biggies will scuttle for cover if someone picks up the brick their thugs hide under. Exposure is bad for business.

(4) Make sure that several of your friends have the information in the event something happens to you. That way, an appropriate investigation will follow if you are harmed. Don't tell other people who has the information, because then something bad could happen to them as well. Instruct friends to take such an incident to the newspapers and other media.

If you are dealing with someone who has considerable money, you must realize that they probably won't try to harm you themselves, they will contract with someone to make the hit. The malignant type is a coward and will not expose himself or herself to personal danger if he or she can avoid it.

- - - -

In short, he is dangerous.
