DEVELOPER DEFILES SACRED LAND AT ST. SAVIOUR’S CHURCH
COUNCILMAN DENNIS GALLAGHER KNEW OF PLAN
Birds and trees destroyed
EMERGENCY PRESS CONFERENCE TO BE HELD SATURDAY, JULY 14
For Immediate Release
(July 13, 2007) The Juniper Park Civic Association is outraged at a Maspeth developer for cutting down centuries-old trees at St. Saviour’s Church in Maspeth, Queens, a property that the civic association has been trying to convince the city to save and convert into a park. A rally will be held on July 14th to denounce the actions of the developer and Councilman Gallagher, who knew of the developer’s plan and did nothing to stop it.
Gallagher has been working with the developer’s lobbying firm, Parkside Group, as well as the owner of the property, Maspeth Development, LLC, who want to develop housing on the sacred site, rather than work with leaders of the Maspeth community who want to save the entire property and convert it into a park and community center. In addition, the community is fighting overdevelopment, Gallagher says he is against overdevelopment, yet is pushing for more housing in an area that is already crowded, polluted and lacking in several basic city services.
JPCA calls emergency press conference at St. Saviour's

Let us see if HDC, MAS, the 4 borros and all the other groups that claim they are for preservation show up and support your effort.
I understand they believe that if St Savours goes, the threats to start to overturn the landmarks law is an idle threat.
They are in for a big surprise (wink)
WHERE IS THE BOROUGH PRESIDENT HELEN MARSHALL ON THIS VITAL QUEENS ISSUE? HER "ASS" SHOULD BE THERE!!!
Is the whole property sacred? Or just the old cemetery?
Correction:
Marshall's DUMB ASS should be there....but it won't because she's in league with all these bastard developers !
Historically, the office of the Queens Borough President has always sided with the borough's builders and not its residents....from the very day it first opened its doors !
The entire property is consecrated land.
Be prepared for a shock tomorrow. I was at the site at 6pm. There are only a handful of trees left. The trees are now the proverbial "water over the dam".
respect to my Queens brethren for taking on this (sadly) infuriating battle. i am unable to make the rally today but please do know a few people have your back... at least in spirit, which isn't worth much, alas.
but that Arby's & Radio Shack where once stood Niederstein's sure are "terrific"-- seeing THAT last week was depressing as hell too.

if the entire property is consecrated, then how is it other churches have sold pieces of their properties to raise funds?
Other churches may not have had their property consecrated. This one did.
All churches (even Satanic one, and the store front churches) have there "properties" blessed and consecrated.
Tell me - does the blessing stop at the property line? How does that happen? Just look at the tools sheds that St. John’s builds on their property, are you going to tell me that when the whole property was blessed that somehow it didn’t include where the tool shed, garage, etc were going to be build?
I think that the cemetery is that is consecrated, and should never be build over.
In Queens they build on cemetaries. Look at Old Astoria and the Remsen House (Astoria Reformed Cemetary), the St George Church cemetary both built on in the last two years. Ten years ago, the Burroughs family cemetary on Alstine in Corona.
Before that, Mt Micheals had little problem moving the stones (and haveing them appear magically at Socrates Park) and bringing in another 6 feet of earth. Whoopa! Apartment graves.
