Queens: We're Number 3!

Here's an article from the NY Times about the status of Queens amidst the other boroughs:

Insecurity to the Third Degree

...in recent months, a phrase has appeared in The Queens Tribune, a weekly newspaper, that suggests that Queens occupies only a fair to middling place in the citywide pecking order. The phrase is “third borough syndrome,” and the implication is that in terms of buzz and cachet, Queens is forever resigned to third place behind Brooklyn (recently hot) and Manhattan (traditionally hot).

No need for worry...when Queens becomes fully yuppified, and all of us are forced out, brooklyn will be bumped back to third.

You can't help but notice that today's Manhattan blackout lasted 45 minutes with Con Ed and Bloomberg all over it, while Queens' lasted 10 days.

Excellent point!

No, it's a terrible point. If this blog serves no other purpose, it's to paint the Bloomberg administration as anti-poor/working class. And that comment is obviously trying to milk that rep. So has East Harlem (and the Bronx, don't forget) gotten ritzy without my knowledge? I was on 103rd a few days ago. It ain't. Or should we be taking away conspiracy theories about how this is proof that there are plans in the works to evict all the hispanics? Please.

Mayor Bloomberg's townhouse was without power. That's why the lights went back on quickly. Also, the largest # of last year's new building permits were issued for the upper east side. Lots in the Bronx that were empty for decades are suddenly filled with multi-unit housing. It's blackouts such as the one we had today that makes the city pause and wonder if the pace of development is wise. And the point that the previous poster was making is that anything in Manhattan will be fixed faster than anything in Queens. Especially if it affects Ol' Turtlehead!

East Harlem is definitely on the path to gentrification:

The new British Invasion

Hasta la vista, El Barrio

"Burke added that the "likelihood of this happening again is very low." He said the disruption had nothing to do with the level of electricity Con Ed customers were using at the time."

HA HA! We've heard that before, haven't we?

There's no need for anyone on this blog to PAINT the Bloomberg administration "anti poor/working class "!

The evidence proves that Monarch/Mayor Mike has done it to himself ! He views these folks merely as his "subjects" !

He probably chose the paint color ("cowardice yellow") at Home Depot !

Did you hear the latest in a revision of the NYC building code ?

It requires all stairwells to be painted in LUMINOUS PAINT so occupants of a building can see their way down in the dark in case of a power failure !!!

Some joke...eh....staircases that glow in the dark !

Isn't that an "imaginative" cheap/quick fix ..... nothing more than an insulting form of band-aid remedy for the very real and rampant chronic disease of over development that has become a plague to our city!!!

Take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning !

Sorry, Queens, but if you walk around Elmhurst and Flushing and places like that calling us #3 is a bit charitable.

Everyone agrees that in the past 30 years Queens has slipped a 'bit.'

Thanks clubhouse!

Could not have said it better myself!

I'm suprised we're not #4, actually. Many swaths of the South Bronx have now gentrified (Alexander Avenue) and other nearby neighborhoods are at the point where Williamsburgh was less than a decade ago. Once the new Yankee Stadium is complete (2009) that area is going to completely skyrocket...Thank God for Staten Island, or we'd really have a complex.

My perception is that Bloomberg is PAINTING HIMSELF as anti-poor and working class - not QC.

Clogged subway lines and power outages are merely a portent of things to come in the wake of the pandemic over development that's ravaging NYC !

We'll all be stranded in the dark & heat (in summer) or cold (in winter) !

Are we willing to just get used to this or start kicking some real ass ? !!!!

Is Queens really #3 ?

I thought that we were always looked upon like #2 (as in poop) by media dinosaurs like the NY Times !
