Getting Railroaded

The city wants to build a platform over the Sunnyside Railyards in order to build 35,000 more lux...er, I mean "affordable housing" units a la Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn.

Here's a compilation of articles about the topic: PlanNYC

Wouldn't it be better to instead build the schools that are sorely needed in that area and create a park out of the rest of the 43 acres? This is a once in a lifetime chance for Queens to make the most polluted area of the borough greener and open up a significant space for all of its huddled masses to enjoy.

Especially since the city messed up Flushing Meadows so badly...

With all this issue of terrorism, and what happend in London and Madrid, that is exactly what we need.

A major transportation hub (with a million commuters eacdh day) under thousands of apartments and office workers.

You got to be stupid and greedy to propose something like this.

What is wrong with a park? Western Queens has the fewest acres of parkland in the borough. Commercial projects can earn a developer millions, and get a politician thousands in donations. How do you put a price tag on a pleasant time in the park? Now multiply that by 1000s of people each day?

Is the name,"Parkside Group" the only time we're going to hear the word "park" being mentioned in Queens? Is the only "green" that we'll hear of are the "greenbacks" they'll be taking in?
