Forgotten Flushing

Forgotten-NY does something a little differently this week and weighs in on the overdevelopment problem in Flushing. Since our two sites share information, you may notice that some of the same photos used on Kevin's page were previously featured on Queens Crap:

My Flushing Was Gone

This item should be called: Flushing- Down- The- Toilet", by Johnny Loo....... Just look at what's happened to "Drain Street, Flushtown" since the time that Donald Manes "went west"! Yet now, there are signs posted along Main St. that read "Flushing a Destination of Choice" (what, choice, it's prime crap)! An older one, if you can spot the original few that still remain (from the post 1964 Worlds Fair era) read: "Flushing a World of Choices"! Gad! If this were my only choice left ....pardon me while "I take the gas pipe"! The same "old" protagonists are responsible for both sign slogans. You'd think that in 50 years they could come up with a more creative line of BS! Well, thery're just mediocre Queens crap" themselves and co-responsible for the crap-pile on Main St.that exists today!

May I suggest a motto? "CURB OVER-DEVELOPERS & LEASH CROOKED POLITICOS"! It would make a nice sticker .

The sticker is a wonderful idea, and should be widely circulated. United we stand!

If I just looked at the pictures and didnt read the text I would think I was looking at a page about what's been happeneing here on Staten Island. Except here, to add insult to injury, they tear down wooded areas, too.

I just enjoyed the web page "My Flushing Was Gone". Excellent and very well done. Keep up the good work...I live on Quince Avenue.

It's sad to think that little by little the unique nabes of NYC are being plowed under in favor of big box stores and little box apartments.

Won't be long before my old nabe, Woodhaven, suffers the same fate.

My birth nabe, East New York, has morphed already.

"THE ROYAL FLUSH" !

Some song lyrics (from the vinyl album classic "Johnny Cash (singing live to inmates) At Folsom Prison" circa 60s-70s?) appropriate for this loss: (I think it went like this) "In the elevator of your dreams, I've been shafted..........I've been flushed from the bathroom of your heart"!

Good job by Kevin.

Its sad to think that someday our children and grandchildren will look around at all this garbarge housing and wonder what the hell people of our generation were thinking - and how could people allow beautiful and irreplaceable houses to be destroyed so some bastard developer could make a quick buck.

We do get the architecture we deserve, and sadly futute generations will have to live with it too, just as we live with the current Penn Station and lament the one that was wrecked, and furthermore, look to spend billions of dollars to replace yesteday's garbage with something tasteful.

But I guess none of those lessons apply here, because this isn't Manhattan.

Our grandchildren will be so used to seeing crap like this, they'll consider it "vintage" and submit them for Landmark Designation (if LPC still exists)!

In all seriousness, wonderful job, with just the right amount of outrage.

(But, to be fair, I must point out that the monstrosity at 155th north of Beech DOES incorporate an oval window! And FNY doesn't even give them credit for trying...)

I was driving around Flushing yesterday. Sad to see all the great old houses being replaced by the crap being built now.

And I thought the McMansions being built in Arlington, VA were ugly.
Everything new looks "McGuido" (I am Italian, I can say that) there in Flushing - scarier than a Stephen King novel.

I love the"Mc Guido" reference. I'm also Italian and also embarrased. You should see Malba, my friend! Some are calling it "Dago Alley"! The once proud haunts of some real Dons (who had class) , it's now full of aspiring Don Cheechos! These kind of folks did not bring us the Rennaisance of 15th Century Italy!
