Village Idiots

R.S.D reports again from Queens Village:
A small one-family house was destroyed to make way for this, um, thing. Is it an apartment building, a three-family house, a motel?


This isn't a new building, people. This was an "alteration."

To see how these "minor" alterations affected the look of this building, take a look at the old photos of that same corner. One was taken in 1927, the other was taken about 2002.

Recognize the house?

Didn't think so.

This was supposed to be an alteration to increase the size of the house about 540 square feet, and to convert it to a two-family house. Look at the number of doors. Lot of doors for a two family house, huh?

On the bright side, the DOB is currently considering revoking the permits. Guess they thought this wasn't something a few bucks under the table could hide. Address: 90-27 Winchester Blvd.

Yes. Two families in our uniquely Queens style.

Three sisters with two husbands and mom and her sister along with nine kids (and a cousin and her friend new in town) in one and

in the other a slightly larger group all related somehow.

What good does revoking the permits do if the construction is already complete? Can they force them to alter it or tear it down?

Absolutely, the DOB will always do the right thing and force the developer to remove any and all sections of the building that don't conform.

Sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face while typing that....

Only one organization managed to get a developer to remove floors already in place, CIVITAS on the (natch) Upper East Side.

A pity none of the preservation groups that get in such a lather over junk like 2 Columbus Circle ever bother to communicate important stuff like this to the outer boroughs.

Oh, what a surprise. Apparently one of the neighbors is peeved that they're now using the basement for - yep, you guessed it - an illegal apartment, so they called it in.

Betcha they won't get in. Even if the owner of the property wanted to set up an appointment with the Dept of Buildings, it's damn near impossible. They won't allow evening appointments or weekend appointments. The DOB will offer you one day out of the week to choose from, too bad if you work, they'll expect you to take off.

I LIVE NEXT DOOR....THERES LIKE 9000 PEOPLE LIVING IN IT AND THE CONTRACTORS DESTROYED MY SIDEWALK,SIDING,FENCE,LAWN. I COMPLAINED BUT AS WE ALL SEE, THIS MONSTROSITY STILL STANDS.....
